No.
If you gave her more than $11,000, you will are supposed to
file a gift return and pay a gift tax on the extra. Unlikely
the gov would detect this unless you paid out in large
chunks.

Isn't there also a rule that the relationship cannot violate
local laws?

For example, it is my understanding that here in NC, this
relationship is illegal (though not enforced) and therefore
you cannot claim you live-in girlfriend as a dependent.

You cannot claim her as a dependent on your 2003 income
tax return.

There are five tests, which must be met:

1. The dependent must have gross income less than the
exemption amount ($3,050 in 2003)
2. You must provide over 1/2 of the dependent's support
for the year.
3. The dependent must be a certain type of relative.
If not a relative, the dependent must live in the
taxpayer's home.
4. The dependent must not have filed a joint return.
5. The dependent must be a citizen, national or resident
of the US, or a resident of Canada or Mexico.

As you can see, the "dependent" in question does not meet
test #1 and test #3.

No to the question about claiming her as a dependent. Marry
her and it MIGHT save taxes, depending on which state you're
in....not to mention the no-tax impact:-)

If your girlfriend is unrelated to you, then she must have
been a member of your household for the entire year to be
claimed.

On the other hand, if your girlfriend is your cousin or
sister, then she is related to you.

Five rules for claiming a dependent.
Rule number One: dependent must be a RELATIVE or MEMBER OF
THE HOUSEHOLD. And too late for a marriage license for
2003.....

No on a couple of counts. She made too much money and she
is not a member of your household for the entire year.

You can't claim her as a dependent, because she wasn't a
member of your household nor was she related to you.

The only return is the good feeling you get from helping her
out in a time of need.

No, you cannot claim her as a dependent. I don`t see any
other way to claim her either.

No. She was neither a relative nor a member of your
household. See IRS Publication 501.

There are none.

Default Claim my girlfriend

My girlfriend lost her fulltime job for the whole 2003 year
and I supported her financially. Her income for the whole
year was less than $5000. We don't live together. My
question is can I claim her as dependent on my tax return?
If not, what is/are other way of claiming her for some
return?

Thank you for any help.
