I don't remember the HUD-1 line numbers, but it's in the
"Adjustments" section. If you were charged for accrued but
unpaid real estate taxes, that amount is deductible as real
estate taxes.

Unless you signed a statement indicating that the gain would
be excludable, you should receive a 1099-S.

Default Real Estate Taxes - Closing Costs

I sold my home last year. The real estate taxes were paid
each year from an escrow account. It's my understanding
that real estate taxes are divided between the buyer and the
seller at the closing. I have received a substitute 1098
form from the mortgage company and I see mortgage interest
listed, but no taxes paid. Where on the settlement
statement can I find the real estate taxes I paid. I think
its line 510 or 511, but would like someone to confirm this
for me. Also, under what circumstances would one receive a
1099S? Thanks for your help. DH
