If you take the standard deduction, have no adjustments to
income, don't get the child tax credit, and don't have any
other income, you'd take 4 (remember the 1 for "one job and
your spouse doesn't work").

If any of these isn't the case, you get to work through the
worksheet, which may give a different number.

That's a start. Do you take the standard deduction or
itemize? If you itemize, it's about one more exemption per
$3000 of itemited deductions. This can come from large
mortgage interest, real estate tax, etc.

For myself, my not working wife and my child, what is the
number of allowances in the W-4? Is it "3"?
