Technically, you are "Married and one " (married means two> number of allowances in the W-4? Is it "3"? people and one for the child) There is a child tax credit not taken into account..if the child is too old for the credit and you don't itemize and your income is $30K and you did married 1 then your refund will be about $400, which I consider "break even". There are a lot of variables here. As in your example, if your wife worked and she did married and one and you did married and one then you would be way under-withholding and would owe money, again, depending on income and credits... Need more information: income, age of child, itemizing or not and how much you itemize..
