Technically, you are "Married and one " (married means two
people and one for the child)

There is a child tax credit not taken into account..if the
child is too old for the credit and you don't itemize and
your income is $30K and you did married 1 then your refund
will be about $400, which I consider "break even". There
are a lot of variables here.

As in your example, if your wife worked and she did married
and one and you did married and one then you would be way
under-withholding and would owe money, again, depending on
income and credits...

Need more information: income, age of child, itemizing or
not and how much you itemize..

assuming that is your only job, then max is 4, although you
may claim any number less if you'd like a big refund.

At least; perhaps more. See the worksheet on the W-4. Fill
it out, and you'll have the number of allowances that will
leave you with a small refund or balance due.

Default W-4 and the number of allowances

For myself, my not working wife and my child, what is the
number of allowances in the W-4? Is it "3"?

Thanks in advance!
