Unless the boarder is a bona fide 501c3 you don't stand a> we let a local boarder keep it. As a charitable contribution, there are two big problems> bills, etc. Can we deduct ( possibly as charitable deduction > ) any of the cost for the animal ? that almost certainly eliminate any tax benefit. First, you generally do not get to deduct a donation of any property unless you give away *all* of your rights in the property to the charity (IRC Section 170(f)(3)). The only real exceptions are very narrow exceptions for certain trust vehicles (like charitable remainder trusts). Second, you must make your donation to an entity that is on a rather short list of entity types that can be qualified (Section 170(c)) and it's not very likely that the outfit boarding this animal is one of those either. -- Ed Zollars, CPA Phoenix, Arizona << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

No. If you give it to a qualifying 501(c)(3) organization,> we let a local boarder keep it. They let disadvantaged and > handicapped kids ride and care for it on a regular basis. > We still own it, though they keep it up, feed it, pay vet > bills, etc. Can we deduct ( possibly as charitable deduction > ) any of the cost for the animal ? you'll have a charitable contribution, but even if these rides that are being given were being given by a qualified organization you could only deduct out-of-pocket expenses, which appear to be zero. | My wife bought a horse (say for $ 1,000). After a year or we let a local boarder keep it. They let disadvantaged and handicapped kids ride and care for it on a regular basis. We still own it, though they keep it up, feed it, pay vet bills, etc. Can we deduct ( possibly as charitable deduction ) any of the cost for the animal ?
