Thanks to all.
I have applied on line and received a PTIN.

My n-key runneth over. That should be P1 plus 7 more numbers.

My PTIN starts with a "P" and is followed by eight digits
just like ProSeries is telling you. If your number is less
than eight digits long then perhaps you have left off the
leading zeros - mine has 3 leading zeros.

You really should still have our CP-571 that assigned you
the number. The CP-571 instructs you to keep it.

My GAWD, that's funny.

Tempted to say find another software provider, one with
knowledgeable support personnel.

If you have been issued a PTIN by IRS, you still have it.
And btw, a W-7 is NOT used to request a PTIN, but an ITIN
for people who do not have a SSN.

What was that fellow drinking, anyway?

No, I suspect something in the software that's not
defaulting to the PTIN you put into the system. Most good
software programs have provisions for carrying over defaults
from last year's set up. After all, don't they allow to
carry forward client data? no less for preparer data.

RTFM. The manual that comes with the software ought to
address this issue. If there is no manual, surely the Help
screen should cover bringing defaults forward somehow.

If the support guy can't tell you how to do it, speak with
his supervisor. After all, you paid for the software and
they OWE you.

I've been using my PTIN since it was issued, and always used
ProSeries. Have you checked that you input the PTIN number
correctly this year. My PS program doesn't not have a
problem with the correct format PTIN number that I
input.....

The PTIN is a P followed by eight digits. The same as it
was last year. There should be no reason for you to get a
new one if you used one last year.

The only change I know of for this year is that non-paid
preparer groups (like AARP, TCE, VITA, etc.) will use PTIN
numbers of the form P1nnnnnnn in the PTIN box for site
identification, instead of their previous alphabetic IDs in
the paid preparer box.

Hank, if your PTIN worked last year, there is no reason why
it should not work this year. But you can get a new one at
www.irs.gov in just a few minutes thru e-services.

Default Ptin # Proseries

Using last years ProSeries I had a Ptin #. using this years
program it give me an error. Stating that the number must be
starting with a P then an eight digit number. Calling tech
support was a 2 hour conversation and then they said I need
to submit a W7 to the IRS for a new number. All I wanted to
do is not advertise my SS #.

Any comments?
Hank
