Not long enough. Too long. Depends on the time of day.

It's useful for me to be able to buy a tax program in
December and estimate my taxes while I still have time to do
transactions (e.g. pay estimated state income tax, make
charitable contributions) during the earlier tax year.

Phoebe, I've already mailed of my OWN 1120S to IRS. First
one I always do of course, so my K-1 is in a folder in
drawer marked curiously "income tax" (wonder what that
means to the uniniated?)

Also four 1040 clients already in, only one finished of
course.

Hang in their, lady.

AT least I got my Georgia program downloaded today and did
my second return. The first on Monday was federal only. He
had his 1099-r from ary retirement back around Dec 25th
even. Oh, and miacle of all, that fellow and wife already
had their 1099-ssa forms.

You can always download a form off the web for any state you
know. If I had one that just had to be done, i.e. client
chomping at the bit, then back to the old fashioned way: do
it my hand! a slow hand. lol

I am now on a first name basis with a gal at the Calif. FTB,
since each year I e-mail asking where the heck are ALL of
the fill-in forms I need. You'd think they would at least
cooperate with those who care to do their taxes early - they
need to replenish the money that has burned holes in the
state's pockets.

Neither are we. We already have three clients who have sent
over stuff. Granted, these are clients who send over stuff
bit by bit but still not usually the first workday after the
New Year!

How many days until April 15?

Yes you ARE! (grinning)

Not counting last Friday, officially first day of tax
season, I've had three in already, one yesterday, two today.
it seems that W-2's and 1099R's for military and government
workers are appearing on the web for download this year.
And if one doesn't have an account, like many retired
military around here, they got their 1099r's back around
DECEMBER 24th! Yes, that's no mistake. My wife got her
Civil service W-2 about Dec 27th , downloaded off the web.
And miracle of all miracles, social security has already
mailed out their 1099-SSA forms! One of my today clients
had her civil service W-2, her Schedule A worksheet AND her
rental property worksheet filled out and is "hot to trot".
Well, you know what I mean.

And I got through with my PATS testing with Memphis
yesterday, so I'm ready. Now if I just had my state return
software I could really begin.

But no problem, I'm having too much fun with 941's, W-2's
and state sales tax returns, par for the course.

Only 106-7 days to go.

We got 1 S-corp return on Monday, and an S-corp and an LLC
yesterday. We got another LLC before Christmas, and just
need to double-check that they really didn't have any more
expenses (crop-share farm and the crop won't sell until
spring, so no issue of income). We've also got about 10% of
our engagement letters back, and they were only mailed out
on Thursday.

On the upside, we've got software for everything except
Oklahoma individual (which will be another 2 weeks), so at
least we don't have to wait for that. But it would have
been nice to at least get year-end payroll and 1099 stuff
underway before starting on the income taxes.

I noticed at their website they are offering a "drop off"
service this year. And, wowie-zowie, there is no additional
fee for dropping off your data! Such a deal! <g

Default Tax season is coming early this year

Am I the only one who is surprised to see how early tax
season is being "promoted"? H & R started their ads before
the year ended. A report on CNN about 1/1/04 showed an IRS
employee giving advice about recording your deductions now
so that you don't forget them by 4/15. My clients are
calling to tell me they have already finished filling out
their organizers. I'M NOT READY FOR THIS TO START YET!
