The state rate is 7.25%. 6% is kept by the state. 1% goes to the local taxing authority and the remaining .25% goes to the local transporation fund. San Francisco has the second highest rate at 8.5%. .25% to the County Finance Authority, .5% to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and .5% to the County Transportation Authority. The highest rate is in the city limits of Avalon at 8.75%. Here in LA, the rate is 8.25%, with the 1% excess going to county transportation. As far as I am aware, there is no limit to how much the local rate can add to the total. It takes a two thirds majority vote of the electorate of the taxing district to increase the rate. -- Alan http://taxtopics.net << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

What he repealed was the vehicle property tax INCREASE that is assessed with the annual registration. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

| No such luck. He got a tax on cars repealed. The vehicle license fee had been tripled and the voters took that as the last straw.
