My brother is the first mate on a merchant ship and I have
prepared his tax returns for the last 8 years. For 2003 he
changed employers from a U.S. based company to a foreign
based company who withholds only union dues and optional
benefit shares. His ship transports cargo in the
Japan-Australia Corridor. He now has a flat in Sydney
where he spends his free time.

- Does he get the foreign earned income exemption?
- Is he subject to FICA & Medicare or worse the
self-employment tax?
- Are there other questions I should be asking?

I only prepare two tax returns a year - mine and his.
Am I over my head now?
