It seems that if this were true, the IRS needs to tell their
people that....

No, they don't. They only send you a letter if you did
something wrong (like forget to file 8453s etc) but if you
don't get a re-up letter in November or December, you are
out of the program unless you make that call.

Additionally, I was told by an IRS employee who handled ERO
signups at their "nationwide tax forums" (Las Vegas edition)
that if the IRS is going to drop you, they will send a
letter saying so.

One year out of the system will not kick you out. You may
want to call the e-help desk, I know the letters are late
this year. I'm on the road and don't have the number, but
someone here will, I'm sure.

try calling the IRS efile folk - they could tell you if your
efin # is still active or if you have to reapply (sorry
don't have the phone # handy)

Don, if I remember correctly, I went for a year without
filing, after first having been approved. I believe I just
called the number I'll give below and they took care,
immediately, that I was reinstated to the program.

"After your application is processed and all involved
parties pass the suitability test, you will be sent an
acceptance letter. Transmitters and Software Developers must
also complete testing before an acceptance letter is sent.
Once accepted, you do not have to reapply each year as long
as you continue to e-file returns.

After testing is completed satisfactorily, Transmitters will
be issued a password that authorize them to transmit e-filed
return data during the filing season which begins in
mid-January and continues through mid-October for Individual
Income Tax Returns and the filing season for Business Income
Tax Returns and Information Returns which is year round.
Testing is required each year for transmitters and software
developers.

The IRS will send you a promotional kit that entitles you to
identify yourself as an "Authorized IRS e-file Provider". We
support IRS e-file with advertising on radio, television and
in print and provide material that you can customize for
your own advertising and promotion. And that's not all! As
an Authorized IRS e-file Provider you become eligible for
special recognition and an incentive and rewards program.

Default E-filing

I have been preparing returns for the past several years and
have e-filed for most of those years.. Last year, however,
for reasons beyond my control, I cut back drastically on my
tax prep work and did not e-file any returns.

Normally I receive a letter from the IRS indicating that I
am "welcome" to e-file again during the coming season. This
year, however, I did not receive such a letter.

My question: do I need to reapply as an ERO after having
e-filed no returns last year? Or is the lack of such a
notice from the IRS not significant? I would appreciate
group's assistance.
