Possibly. Watch out for support from the father, or a joint
return if she has married.

It's likely that they both qualify as your dependents. See
IRS Publication 505.

No problem on claiming your daughter. And assuming that the
state (welfare) is not providing more than half of the
support for your grandchild, it appears that you would meet
the dependency tests for the baby as well.

You say you are providing your daughter's sole support.

Unless you also provide more than 50% of the baby's support,
you haven't a prayer.

Assuming all are U S citizens, you're going to have to find
out about what support the father is providing, and/or what
support others may be furnishing (like the father's
parents).

You see how I read this, right?

Yes. You meet all five dependency tests -- Member of
Household or Relationship; Citizen; Joint Return; Gross
Income; and Support. Of course, your grandson qualifies on
the same basis. [Assuming she is not married, based on your
facts.]

Probably. If you paid more than half the total support for
your daughter you can claim her. If you paid more than half
the total support for the grandchild, you can claim him. The
preceding assumes that the other two tests not discussed
(joint return and citizenship/residency) are passed.

Yes, as long as you provide more than 1/2 the child's support
and no one else is entitled to claim the child.

Default Claiming a dependent question?

My daughter goes to college full-time in another state. I am
providing her sole support. She is 22 years old. She also
has a new baby. She will not file a tax return for 2003
because she has no income. I intend to claim her as my
dependent. What about the baby?? Can I claim this grandson
also?

Thanks for the help.
