We are resident aliens in the US, me on an H1B, her on an
H4 visa. She is temporarily working in the UK and will
return to the US.

You haven't provided enough information. Are you US citizens
living in the UK as lawful permanent residents, resident
aliens or nonresident aliens? Or are you just the exact
opposite? Or is your status different than your wife's
status? Are you dual status aliens?

You may want to read IRS Pub 519, US Tax Guide for Aliens
available at
http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/page/0,,id=11849,00.html
And yes, there is a brand new tax treaty between the US and
the UK. You can find the US Treasury explanation at:

Default How to file 1040 joint return with UK source income?

I have only US source income for this tax year.

My wife has income in the UK for the last 3 months of the
year and no income for the other months.

How do we file this with the IRS - do we need any forms
beyond a 1040?

Is it helpful to file married-seperatly instead of
married-jointly or would we be off worse?

Is there a special tax treaty between the US and the UK?
