If you want to avoid this: buy an exchange-traded index fund such as SPY or MDY or a combination of exchange traded index funds. For bonds, you can buy tax-free municipal bonds or even an exchange traded index bond fund. Here again, do not buy most mutual funds. The exchange-traded index funds will not skim off as much for management as a Managed Mutual fund. People provided for their own retirement by investing long before IRAs, 401ks, etc. existed. Go to the Amex web site to get a list of Exchange-traded funds. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

Do NOT be afraid of the word annuity! There are two phases to an annuity, the accumulation phase and the payout phase. During the accumulation phase you put after tax dollars into the annuity, which then grow tax deferred. During the payout phase you can choose to tax a lump sum, make systematic withdrawals, or convert to an annuity. Most annuities available today do NOT require annuitization on the back end and quite a few annuities offer portflio inusrance which guarantees that you can never get back less than what you put in. | I am a independant computer consultant who does project based work for a variety of companies. Most of the time, I am hired as a W2 hourly employee. Because I am a W2 hourly employee, most companies will not allow me to contribute to a 401k plan. The only option I have for tax free retirement savings is a traditional IRA. Therefore I am only able to save $3,000 a year for retirement. I am only 26 and this is a crucial time for me to save for my retirement. Does anyone have any ideas of other options for tax-free retirement contributions? Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks!!! << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
