N
one ataul, Paul.

Down heah, it's a common practice, even though I don't do
it. And you ought to see the tax prep yellow pages ads by
CPA's.

If the IRS cares only about 1099's verses W-2's in this
regard, I suspect it has to do with preventing the 1099
mailing from being tossed in the trash along with similar
promotional mailings from banks, etc. Such would be less
likely the case with W-2's, this new kind of advertising
stuffer notwithstanding....

I guess I don't get my drink now, but I do put a note in the
envelope of all the W-2s, 1099s I do. Basically, it says
your (form) has been prepared by HELJAN Associates, Tax and
Bookkeeping. If you have any questions regarding this
(form), please contact us at 717-continued.

I don't say come to me,but I leave the door open.

Default W-2 inserts

Every now and then I end up with an individual client who
has a W-2 whose envelope contains the W-2 (no surprise) but
a solicitation from a tax prep firm (a local firm, sometimes
not a CPA or EA if that matters, sometimes it is a CPA or
EA) for individual tax prep work from (I assume) their
clients employees. This has never sat well with me, as I
believe it to be slightly on the unethical side, if not
outright prohibited. The only thing I can see about any
prohibited solicitations appears to be directed towards 1099
type reporting [§1.6042-4(d)(2)(i)].

Is there any prohibition against these solicitation inserts
being sent with the W-2's?
