On the other hand, you might not like the neighborhood you're in... You ought to come up here and research. Who knows! It's possible. Very hard for a person to live on $50k in NYC unless you room share. You'll be paying Federal Income tax, State Income tax, City Income tax, and sales tax to start. Commutes are incredibly horrible (long and tedious), and inconsistent (depending on traffic). -Rich in NYC << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

The NYC berbs, maybe. At the present time, there is no "non-resident" NYC tax. So it will be much cheaper to live out of NYC. NYC tax rates mfj=3.534% s=3.591% Remember, NYS tax will also apply and cannot be avoided by living in NJ. lol Charlie << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

A grad student with a Masters in Taxation took a job in> moving to the NYC metro area. New York City for $52,000 a year. To afford to live within a short subway commute to his job, he had to share an apartment with 3 other men AND THAT WAS EIGHT YEARS AGO! He got married three years ago and they bought a home for $300,000, but his commute went from 15 minutes to over an hour - he now gets to read two newspapers on his way to work and catnap on his way home. The problem is NOT so much taxes as it is cost of living and quality of life. | I've recently been offered a job in NYC and thinking of moving to the NYC metro area. Can someone advise me as to how much of an annual salary of 50K is lost in taxes and what the breakup in taxes is? Also, is it cheaper in terms of taxes to live somewhere in NJ instead of NYC? Thanks, -S << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |
