The IRS would prefer that you file your return as soon as
possible. If you are missing W-2 or 1099-DIV forms, contact
the payors and get replacements. Duh.

You have already EXCEEDED any possible extension. In fact,
if you only requested the automatic extension by April 15
(form 4868) you are long-past the extended due date. Your
return was due by August 15, 2003.

If you are due a refund, the IRS will not assess any penalty
(which is due on taxes owed), but consider that the IRS is
holding on to YOUR money and not paying ANY interest. That
might be penalty enough.

If you have to file an amended return later (and you gave no
reason why this might be necessary), then you have up to
three years to do so.

If they owe you and you have nothing time sensitive on your
return (SIMPLE contribtuions, etc) then just file as soon as
you find your papers. Since you are getting a refund, it
will not matter.

Default Is it better to ask extention or file and amend

Is it better to request an extension to file your 1040, or
would the IRS prefer that you file with estimations and then
subsequently file an amended 1040X with appropriate
schedules? I have been granted one extention (to Oct 15)
but now I can't find any of my 1099-DIVs (recent room move
in the house, and no one knows what happened to them). The
IRS owes me (about $8000) so I don't think they can ding me
with penalties. Which way is better?
