What you want is in the 1040 worksheet in colulmn I starting at about Row 542, and the Worksheet for line 53 is just above that if you have 25% or 28% gains in line 19 of 20. New 6251 is just above that. Put in you tax status at the top and it'll calculate your 2003 taxes. ed << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

That instruction is a "dummy" instruction. If theyfollowed the text above line 29 correctly, they would never be on line 30 to start with. The text above line 29 says if 27 is more than 28, go to line 40. Line 29 is amount from line 27, so line 30 is "subtract line 29 (line 27) from line 28". The only way that results in a negative number is if 29 is more than 28, in which case we already told them to go to 40. But maybe we need to further idiot-proof it or remove the If clause from 30 altogether. Don't know if we have room to add "enter -0- and" to make it read "If zero or less, enter -0- and go to line 40". If Line 27 is more than Line 28, you are instructed to skip> into my spreadsheet, I find an instruction I'd like to > comment on. Part IV, line 30, says "Subtract line 29 from > line 28. In this instance, Line 30 would be blank and you would enter a zero on Line 41. If Line 27 is not more than Line 28, you continue to Line 29. Line 30 will then either have a positive number or a zero. If Line 30 is zero you skip to Line 40 and Line 41 would get a zero. If Line 30 has a positive number you continue to Line 31. | In struggling to incorporate the 8/12/2003 draft of Sched D into my spreadsheet, I find an instruction I'd like to comment on. Part IV, line 30, says "Subtract line 29 from line 28. If zero or less, go to line 40." Line 41 says "Enter the amount from line 30 (if line 30 is blank, enter -0-)" Does the line 30 instruction mean "If zero or less, leave blank and go to line 40"? That is, under what conditions would line 30 be blank? Otherwise, if I get a negative number in line 30, it is used in line 41. If the answer is sparkling clear to any of you experts, please enlighten me. Or if you agree that these instructions need imorivement, one of you may wish to forward a comment to the right person or department at IRS.
