A car is curb weight and a truck or van (including sport
utilities of minivans) is gross vehicle weight (loaded
weight). Kilpinger had a good article on this last month.
They included a list of vehicles that qualify at
www.kiplinger.com

Default Gross Vehicle Weight

The code limits depreciation on passenger vehicles. It
defines a passenger automobile in part as a vehicle with an
"unloaded gross vehicle weight" of 6,000 lbs or less
[280F(d)(5)(A)(ii)]. The gross vehicle weights as listed on
manufacturers websites (and on car door panels) seems to be
a "loaded" weight (websites define gross vehicle weight as
weight "when properly equipped; includes weight of vehicle,
passengers, cargo and equipment.") For purposes of
determining if a vehicle satifies the weight limit, what
weight should be used, the manufacturers' gross vehicle
weight or the "curb" weight (weight without passengers and
cargo)
