IDs and employment tax IDs; that individuals with sales tax IDs would need to get a FEIN; and that disregarded (for income tax purposes) businesses would need to get a FEIN before they could apply for a state employment EIN, etc., etc. As an example of the latter problem, we DID get an FEIN (by mistake) for my mother-in-law's living trust, so we didn't have any trouble in having that trust hire a household employee -- but the state employment tax ID had to be obtained within 15 days in order to report the employment to the state for child support purposes, while the FEIN (if required at all) would not be required until the W-2 needed to be filed. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

First, the state of Georgia messed with our minds when they changed the numbering for sales tax numbers and now this!! Carol If you awoke to find yourself a success, you weren't asleep. ("20"? > Where's that?) relate it to any of the "FORMER" district offices, If it were, it might have been associated with the New York area, the old number sequences had a geographic scheme. The new numbers have no geographic associations, SBSE, WI, LMSB, TEGE have various Headquarter, Service Center-Campus, and Area office locations. Geographic/numeric model no longer works well for identifying which components of the IRS service the taxpayers needs. << -------------------------------------------------> << The Charter and the Guidelines for submitting > << messages to this newsgroup are at www.asktax.org > << -------------------------------------------------> |

Sadly the two digit prefix has lost all relationship with> Five years ago I would never have dreamed that I could sit > down at my computer on a Saturday morning, access a web site > at IRS and key in the SS4 data and instantly receive the > FEIN. > It's going to be difficult though, to get used to not > getting numbers with a "63" or "58" prefix. ("20"? > Where's that?) the home address of the entity. A corporation that I applied for in June of 2002 had the same thing. I think they are running out of numbers. Now you have to be more attentive to the first two digits. Way back I had a problem with a Virginia Corporation that applied for an EI # with a NC address, 56 vs 54. I think they should switch to Alphanumeric, like auto tags. That way they could generate extra income with Vanity EI#s. I know the computer geeks will say they cannot do it. That would mean they would actually have to do some work. -- Frederick E. Five years ago I would never have dreamed that I could sit down at my computer on a Saturday morning, access a web site at IRS and key in the SS4 data and instantly receive the FEI#. It's going to be difficult though, to get used to not getting numbers with a "63" or "58" prefix. ("20"? Where's that?)
