No, but the sale of goods does not give rise to a 1099 being
issued.

And since this is not a regular business endeavor (casual
sale in fact) there's no sales tax issue (unless the sale is
to someone IN your state, and YOUR state says otherwise;
check with them).

As for income tax liability, if on any book you sell it for
more than you paid for it (e.g. if I sold one of my many
first editions for more than I paid for it in that charming
little book shop in Raleigh, NC), you declare that gain on
your tax return.

I don't know whether they DO issue a 1099, but they
SHOULDN'T. It seems to me that they are acting as
your agent in selling the books; so, unless the buyer
would be required to prepare a 1099 in a private sale,
there's shouldn't be a 1099 at all.

The books being personal property, you are taxed on a gain
and not allowed to claim a loss. (Schedule D). You are not
likely to be able to sell at a gain, so just make a record
of the original costs in case Amazon does send some kind of
a report.

If they do, you report the sale as a washout.

Default Selling used books through Amazon

What is your tax liability for selling used books through
Amazon?

Do they issue a 1099?

I'm thinking of clearing out my bookshelves, and I'd like to
sell off some books. Top, I think I could get a couple of
hundred dollars for them. However, I bought these books to
read, at retail; not sell at a loss. It's not a business or
even a part time job.

Has anyone done this before?

Thanks in advance.
