The answer depends upon how you are qualifying for the SSA
benefits.

If you are qualifying on your own (you worked other jobs
that were covered by SS) then it is possible that your
benefits will be affected by the "windfall elimination
provision." This is a complex formula that modifies the
amount you receive from SSA when you receive a pension from
a job that was not covered by SS. Rather than explain how
the formula works, you can go to the SSA website below and
read all about it. The formula will not reduce your benefit
by the full amount of the state pension.

On the other hand, if you are qualifying for the SSA benefit
as a spouse or widower, then you might get hit by the
"government pension offset" provision. This formula is not
complex. The offset reduces the amount of your SSA benefits
by 2/3 of the amount of your government pension. In your
instance, 2/3 of $300 is $200. Therefore, your SSA benefits
would be reduced $200. For more information go to:

You're asking about a social security provision known as the
"Windfall Elimination Provision." SSA Publication 05-10045
covers this topic. The publication is online at the link
below.

Default $600 Social Security and $300 Calif. State Teachers Pension Both?

I am about to retire with a $600 SS pension. My California
State Teachers retirement will pay me about $300 more. Is it
true that Social Security will reduce my benefit $300? Is
there a way around this?
