Sorry for the slow reply; I don't get as much newsreading
time as I used to. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is my baby,
who will be 9 weeks old on Saturday. I work for her
Grandma, so yeah, we sort of do keep a pet Caterpillar in
our office. Except we discovered neither one of us could
work with her here, and her Grandpa spent his whole day
poking her so she'd wake up, playing with her until she
cried, then handing her to one of us. So now she stays home
with her other mom while I work in the morning, then I go
home and watch her while her other mom comes to work.

Shame on me. Here I was thinking y'all were deliberately
making it hard on the auditor. I've heard of that
happening. And since you gave him the coolest part of the
building, hope you pointed that out to him.

sure hope in buying another's practice you also buy the
building with air conditioning. These desk top computers
need cool dry air to keep from crashing. WEll, that sounds
like a valid reason anyway. It's what I tell my clients who
work out in the Southern heat.

The smiley faces get converted if the reader is using
Outlook Express with OE Quotefix. Nice little utility that
reformats your replies so that you don't get additional
wordwraps due to the extra "> " charaters that are inserted
in front of each line. See http://home.in.tum.de/~jain/
(There is a version for Outlook also.)

Well, to be perfectly honest, at that point, there was no
air conditioning other than in my boss' office, so we were
all hot. But we were in shorts and the poor auditor was in
a suit. Downstairs is both out of our hair and the coolest
part of the house, and we had an unlimited supply of cold
drinks.

We have window units upstairs now (in both offices, because
the Very Hungry Caterpillar sleeps in the other office, and
has low heat tolerance), but we work there and there's no
work surface for anyone else. If we had a client drop by
(which they do at their own peril), they'd get the same
table the auditor is getting.

Last one for us resulted in a $50K+ change. Prior preparer
paid for the audit and everything.

I suspect this audit is going to get the client a small
refund. We were in the process of buying a practice, and
while I did most of the work on the return, the selling CPA
signed the return and made the decision to pass on the
questions I had. When we asked about some of them as part
of the "gather these records" process, it turns out the
client had additional deductions.

The last time I was anywhere near Oklahoma City, or in that
neighborhood, was in September 1978, but it was hot. I
mean H O T! 100 degrees or thereabouts. Driving through in
sports car with non working a/c unit. (Colorado was SO
nice when we got there.)

Anyway, I'm not one of those who believe in deliberately
making things unconfortable for an auditor. Best to get
'em in, and get 'em out asap. I won't let them use my
copying machine though, unless they bring their own paper.
Coffee, I do offer them.

And I think examiners, auditors, inquisitors, appreciate
that, since they're human, too. I think.

Last in office audit for a corporation resulted in no
change. Now, I'm not going to say that the fact that she
was from my hometown had anything to do with it. (Her
father, turns out, worked for my father briefly once, and he
also, as chief of police, gave me my very first traffic
ticket for running stop sign. Don't ask how long ago!
(Insert smiling face here for your viewing pleasure)

How DO you get that little smiley face, Phoebe?

The last audit we had (also in August, in the
un-air-conditioned office), the auditor was more than happy
to take a glass of ice water. He also decided after about 2
hours that he needed to reschedule for October.

Nor would it be fair to have workers hammering and sawing away
in the office.

Please report the outcome. Also it is not fair to turn the
heat on in the office, to provide a work table with 1/16"
cut from two diagonal legs, or to provide work space under a
heavily travelled stairwell. (just some things that have
been reported to me).
