There's no way you can force them to send the money to
anybody else, especially you.

If you ask nicely, you might be able to get them to
re-donate the money to a similar type of organization.
Whether or not they do so, it should have no affect on your
taxes. (If you get some benefit from the other organization
based on the contribution, that ought to be taxable
somehow.)

Thanks seth... that's the key point - do I have any case /
tax law to support that I can have them transfer it away
from them - I never earmarked it for them or for a specific
use with them (other than giving it to them to start with
and asking that they leave it in my account to cover future
donations...

If you had the ability to get the money back then was the
donation valid in the first place?

Asking them to transfer it to a different, similar entity is
much safer.
