Default Re: Credit Card Rewards and Frequent Flyer Programs

I've been using Money for years and am very satisfied. Yes, it has bugs, but
I understand what the bugs do and how to get around them. Considering how
little we pay for the program and support, it's pretty good, IMO. Others
will differ in that regard.

My question was focused on credit cards with rewards programs, used by
others here, that interact directly with Money.

Chris,
When Money or any other personal financial software can do what you
want automatically AND CORRECTLY all the time it will be time for you to fold
up your tent. Be practical for what you get for your money with this software.
Good luck. Steve

I was just considering doing this recently. My family has significant cash
flow through the single credit card we use. I'll buy bubble gum with it, if
I can.

I think it may have a rewards program, but I haven't investigated much. Has
anyone investigated which card is best for merchandise gift-card prizes? For
airline rewards? I wouldn't mind paying an annual fee if the earnings
justified it.

A requirement I have, though, is that it downloads directly into money and
will automatically draft the monthly balance off my checking account. That
makes money management transparent..

Like everyone else, I have no info on any possible Money SDK, but if you're
an Excel programmer, I've written some things in Excel on top of the
Ultrasoft MoneyLink tool. I pull all the transaction info into a separate
workbook, then there's a dataset I can use with other VB modules for custom
reporting and charting. No updating the db, but if you are looking for
something to slice/dice data, this may be of use.

I don't bother tracking points on the system.

However, for those that offer a cash refund / rebate program (discover, AE Blue, etc), I established an A/R ledger. Each month I enter the amount of money I have earned (income: CC rewards). When I received the annual check, I zero out the account and transfer the payment to my checking account (or credit account if they credit the statement). That way, I can track the money owed me and anticipate when I will receive it. My net worth statement is also correct - wouldn't want to understate it by $25.00!

Was poking around in Money 2004 the other day and noticed that one could
associate a Frequent Flyer Program to a credit card (btw, some people have
"Rewards" programs instead of Frequent Flyer -- be nice to be able to rename
it). My first thought was "Cool, now I don't have to dig up statements or
log on to my bank's website to view how many points I have."

In short order, I discovered that there really wasn't much "coolness" to it
at all. The point balance does not update automatically, which makes the
whole Frequent Flyer thing just a waste of time and a big disappointment.
As most people know, rewards programs, frequent flyer programs and such
usually give you a point or a mile with each one or two dollars charged onto
a credit card. Is there a way to have Money do this? If no, than is there
a wish list where I could request this functionality in a future revision of
Money?

And while Microsoft is at it, I bet tracking Cash Rewards would be useful
for folks with Discover cards.

This request wouldn't be that insignificant. If you use your credit card as
the main tool for making your daily purchases and pay off your balance each
month, than you can quickly rack up some points. My wife and I redeem our
points throughout the year for several hundred dollars in Macy's and
Nordstrom gift certificates. It would be nice to be able to track this and
have MS Money track my point accumulation for me.

On a side note, I do a little programming for myself on the side and make my
own add-ins for Excel and Outlook. Does anyone have any information a
person could use to put his own functionality in MS Money? I'd much rather
do this myself than wait years for Microsoft to put it in a future revision
(if ever). I haven't found any kind of MS Money SDK out there. Is there no
way to make add-ins (like in Microsoft Office) or access the jet database
using ODBC or MS Access?

Default Credit Card Rewards and Frequent Flyer Programs

Is there no
way to make add-ins (like in Microsoft Office) or access the jet database
using ODBC or MS Access?
