In Tools-> Options-> Backup I suggest checking
x Automatically backup to hard disk on exit
x Prompt me before backing up each time*
x Make my file small ...

Then periodically, perhaps once per month or more, copy your
latest backup (named differently from your earlier backups) to a
CDR. With XP, this can be a copy and paste operation. Otherwise
use the burning software that came with your CDR drive.

I suggest use of a USB Flash drive also. They typically act like a
big floppy. Set that to back up maybe once per week.

* This has two advantages. You can change the file name
occasionally. I like to pick a name something like money040728.
Then it is easy to change the name to have multiple backups. The
..mbf extension is automatic. The other advantage is that you can
choose "Don't Back Up, or you change your mind about exiting by
simply clicking the X in the upper right of the pop-up box.

The USB flash drives are very cool. See http://umpmfaq.info/faqdb.php?q=69
for more info on requirements any backup scheme should meet.

Okay, I could not transfer accounts from one file to another. But I deleted
all my accounts from the file and reset them up and downloaded all the
information. LOTS of work resigning the categories and what not. I also had
to go through all my Bill Payments and regular Income entries and reset what
accounts they are set with. I also had to redo all my mortgage accounts.
ARGH!!

I have one quick question to finish off what I did:

What is the best way to back up the files??

Okay I got an empty file open and will download my transactions and reset up
my file. I should not lose any information here, but I do have a couple of
questions.

How do I transfer certain accounts from one file to another? I want to
transfer my Mortgage, cash accounts, and investment portfolio. Not sure how
to do it,

Thanks again

a) don't rely on floppies - go for something inherently more reliable -
memory sticks perhaps?

b) five disks is not enough! You could easily be into round two before you
find you have a corrupt file and all your backups are of that corrupt file.

c) I personally backup to hard disk every time I update and then once a week
go out to removable media and not floppies ;-)

I think a secret is to do a backup on the floppy drive everyuse and rotate
disks everyday. Maybe have five disks or something!

An alternative, depending on how much other data you have in the
file, is to create a new file with a new name. File-> New-> NewFile.
You can then try setting that up. If you don't like the new file at
some point, you can still go back to trying the old file.

Also review your backup strategy so that you have more than one
backup file under unique names to choose from.

I've also had similar problems in Money 2003. I cleaned out the IE
temp files & I discontinued online services to my bank & set them up
again. In the Account Set up, when I clicked the logon to bank (yes the
logon on is correct 'cuz I can log on to the bank's web site w/ the same
info) I got an error that closed down Money (Windows XP "user-friendly"
error msg, which means no info on what went wrong).

This download (connecting to my bank) failure started around May of this
year. Any MS updates that may have wonked things up?

Sorry for all the short messages.

I am considering deleting all the suspect accounts and starting over by
downloading all my records from the bank. What do you think of that. The
only records that are in those accounts come from the banks.

Well it did not restart that time. Though there were no new transactions
either, but the missing transactions still do not appear in the list..

I actually doubt that this will bypass the issues, but I have a
little hope. I may just help isolate a bit just where the problem
occurs.

Start-> Settings-> ControlPanel-> FolderOptions-> FileTypes

Select OFX-- Open Financial Exchange File .

Click Advanced. Check Confirm Open After Download. That will cause
you to get a pop-up box with the option to save the file rather
than have Money open the file immediately.

After saving to a temporary location as *.ofx, File-> Import the file
in Money. Here's hoping.

The above assumes that the file is OFX. If it is QIF, replace OFX
with QIF in the description.

I am not concerned that MONEY restarts when I download, but I am concerned
when I do download the transactions they do not appear in the account
information

I would like the information you mentioned and maybe that will bypass the
issues that I am having.

Thanks again

Would you like information as to how to make Money not always
automatically detect/intercept the downloads, allowing you to save
the files on disk? Then you could do File-> Import later as you
wished.

Now I use Canadian banks and the majority of Canadian banks are not set up
to use Money's online services. Instead I have to go to the bank's website
and download the transactions manually. When I do this Money detects the
download.

The errors and restarts that I experience are experienced from any of the
three banks that I download information from. The only time I do not get
errors and restarts from new transactions is when I manually enter the
transactions for what I call my "Cash Account" Where I keep track of my cash
spending.

Thanks again

Donnie

I would discontinue online services at that institution, and I would
then again set up the account for online access again.
Accounts&Bills-> AccountSetUp-> SetupOnlineServices

If you bought a non-OEM copy of Money, you might try contacting
Microsoft directly.

The internet files deleted just fine. I had 15,000 of them! WOW!

I repaired the file directly from money. This is what happened.

When I selected quick repair the program went back to sign in. I signed in,
but once loaded the program encountered errors and restarted. Once I
restarted I downloaded my transaction directly from my bank and once
download the program again encountered errors and crashed.

I would have to say that there has been no change. Any other suggestions?

Thank you,

In Internet Explorer delete your browser temporary files with
Tools-> InternetOptions-> DeleteFiles.

Then in Money do File-> RepairMoneyFile-> QuickFileRepair for good
measure.

These things may not cure the problem, but they are worth trying.
Any change?

Default Errors downloading transactions

I have MS MONEY 2004, but I am finding that when I try to download my
transactions manually from my bank the program needs to restart. When I
restart the account shows that it downloaded the information and shows the
correct account balance......... BUT the transactions do not appear. When I
try to download again it crashes.

Based on what I mentioned do I need to reinstall?
Is my data file corrupted?
Will I lose my data?

Thanks for all your help you can give me!!

I am a dumby and did not back up! Maybe I will start when I get this
figured
out.

I looked through the FAQ but did not see anything that matched up with what
I am experiencing. I did make a test file and downloaded all the
transactions without a problem. It seems the only time I experience a
restart is when there are new transactions!! When there are no new ones to
download it works fine, but I still am not able to see the transactions I
have made this I started to experience this.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Donnie

-----------------------------

I have used SALV.EXE and ran it a couple of times. I ran it until it said
there are no more errors. However, once I loaded the fixed file and
downloaded my transactions from the website, I encountered the errors again.
The running SALV.EXE on the file I just used, I do see again, one error in
the log.

Anyone seen this before?

Donnie
