It could as a workaround if the stock transactions are not
downloaded both times. You could try.

Go to the details for the existing stock. Blank the symbol! Rename
the old stock "XYZ Corp Old Purchase". Then create a new stock
called "XYZ Corp".

Default How to Enter Same Security as New Purchase

I owned a particular stock and sold it several years ago. It is now once
again attractive, so I bought it. Money 2002 has resurrected all my old
information for this security and using this information to show ROI. I want
to treat this as a separate transaction to better reflect my profit / loss.
Can this be done?

If you are having trouble following this, consider this example:
I originally bought stock for $1000 and sold it later for $1200. Two years
later, I bought the same stock for $1400 and the price is now $1350. Money
is reporting a profit of $150 when my head is telling me I have a loss of
$50. How can this be reconciled?
