Default Is MS Money 2004 Worth it?

I think it's worth if for the fact that it has preferred
payee names. I used to hate the fact that activity
downloaded from my bank would have to be changed manually
to my payee name.

With 2004 for, you can create a payee and also specify
variations of the payee name that will be downloaded from
your bank.

With M05 likely coming out sometime in the next four months or so, probably
not just now. There are incremental differences from M02 to M04, but they
aren't big deals. See http://www.microsoft.com/money/info/upgrading.asp for
incremental changes. Many of these things sound like bigger deals than they
actually are.

When (if) M05 comes out you should consider it--for a few more marginal
feature improvements and supportability for some more time. I'd agree that
annual updates for every user are probably not necessary or beneficial
(unless a new version has some new feature(s) worth going to beyond what
we've seen for many versions now) but I don't think it's wise to get too far
off current for most users.
