| Hi, The memory management that you are viewing has to do with the way that virtual memory is allocated in Windows CE. This is normal. See http://www.cewindows.net/faqs/ram.htm for details on how ram is used in the Pocket PC. -- Chris De Herrera http://www.cewindows.net http://www.tabletpctalk.com "Dean" <deanDOTmajorATadelphiaDOTnet> wrote in message news:uEDAzVrLEHA.3052[at]TK2MSFTNGP12.phx.gbl... - quote - > Sorry, I did mean soft reset. | Sorry, I did mean soft reset. But I regularly go into start | settings | memory | running applications to close unused apps, and my available memory still shrinks to nothing after a week or two. Is this normal? I don't like to do regular soft resets, because I read somewhere that PPC2003 has a bug where each soft reset takes successively longer to perform. If I close running programs regularly, shouldn't my available memory stay around the same level? | When you say Hard Reset, do you really mean hard reset?? a hard reset restores the PPC back to factory condition and you have to re-install all your apps and data. Generally a hard reset is done only to correct very severe problems (I've had my Ipaq almost 2 years and only hard reset twice) A soft reset on the other hand is simply a "reboot" of the machine. Just like your desktop, a good re-boot occasionally is generally a good thing to "clean out the cobwebs". a soft reset is generally done by simply pushing the reset button on the back (or side or bottom- depending on unit). it will not erase any apps or data. Your pocket PC does not really close apps when you press the close button, it simply hides them, and automatically closes unused apps as memory is required. there are several third party apps that will actually allow you to control when and how applications are closed (wisbar, gigabar, batterybar to name a few) as well as you can manually close programs by going in to start | settings | memory| running applications. Hello, I'm new to this, so I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but it seems like one of the programs on my SX56 has a memory leak. After a hard reset, the available memory for programs shrinks (over a course of about a week or two) from 8 or 9 MB down to 1 or 2 MB, and finally down so low that I have to do another hard reset to get anything to run. I have a Siemens SX56, with PPC2003 (Phone Edition), and I only have 3 apps installed: MS Pocket Money MS Pocket Streets MS Voice Command I'm pretty sure I have the most recent version of each of these. Has anyone heard of any of these programs having memory leak problems? Or is this just the nature of PPCs with only 32MB of RAM? Thanks for any help, Dean |
