| Stan, Keep at it. I have tried repairing Money04 in normal mode under control pannel in Add remove programs. It whent through the process but did not fix the problem. I did what you are doing, go in safe mode to complete my work. While there I thought about unistalling, I received a new error. This new error is a windows installer issue while in safe mode trying to uninstall Money04. I am now thinking this is the problem and it is associated with mscofd.dll. I will email MS via the passport BS they want us to use. | Well, if that's really the root cause, it doesn't seem right to blame it on Microsoft. I do agree that it is unfortunate the thing is relatively exposed to lots of these kinds of issues, but where viruses are involved, all bets are off. But if you want to go to Quicken, be our guest: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.as...7&loc=105&sp=1. | I am having the same problem. I had a virus as well, Norton was off while I configured this new sytem. It is gone now. So, when I start MS Money 2004 I get the error message that lets me click here or send a report, that crap. I tried to run Salvage.exe and it wanted only .mny files so, I stoped trying to salvage the dll amd exe files. Have you unistalled in safe mode and then reinstal? I am in your shoes. Let me know what your next move is. TK - quote - > -----Original Message----- > My Money 2004 was working but all of a sudden stopped starting. Oh, this what what I have done first!> enough, nor researching this thoroughly enough. You seem to want to > whine about MS support, rather than dig in your heels and figure out > what's really wrong. 1. I immediately found that the problem does not occur in Safe Mode which means that it a confilct with either one of the drivers or program. Of course I stopped all the services and manually terminated all processes. No luck. 2. I extracted MFCOFD.DLL from Money CD 3. I uninstalled Money several times into a different folder. I have seen the newsgroups articles you menitioned - nothing that can give me a hit. My point is that a program should be restored to the working state by resintalling it if a computer is in a working state (which I know it is now) I don't belive the reformating and reinstalling is a solution because you will never find out what was really wrong. For example, a few posting mentioned Microsoft IM9 as a possible culprit. What if I reinstall everything and then install this IM and Money starts crashing? Reformat again? |

To be perfectly blunt about it, I don't think you're looking close> My last hope was Microsoft Support enough, nor researching this thoroughly enough. You seem to want to whine about MS support, rather than dig in your heels and figure out what's really wrong. For example, I see seven Microsoft Knowledge base articles, for Money alone, that mention Mscofd (note: search in MS KB without the .dll extension), and 290 newsgroup messages via google groups. If this dll file is distributed and installed soley as part of the money installation, then it follows that reinstalling Money will reinstall the file on your system. If the file is not, or cannot be, installed when re-installing Money, then figure out why that is, determine a workaround, and you may have your fix. The stuff I've read while scanning the various articles seem to indicate there was a problem with this dll in Money versions for 98 and 99. Newer newsgroup articles mention Money 2004 and this dll file, thus there seems to be a new and different issue in M04. Have you tried the workarounds that mention Money 2004? Have you tried the super salvage utility? You mention your system was infected with some trojan viruses, but is now clean. That raises suspicions about the innoculation procedures the virus scanners use. Maybe you are using a virus scan and repair program that restored an obsolete version of mscofd.dll, and thus caused your problem, look in the virus scan log files for any hint of this. Maybe that same virus program is preventing a newer copy of the dll from being installed. (And perhaps MS Support knows more than they are letting on in telling you to reformat and reinstall...). One more suggestion, and then you need to go off on your own and do your homework: Take take your money file to another machine, load Money 04 on that machine, and see if you can successfully open and use the money file. If you can, (which I'd expect you can), then the problem is not in your money file, the problem is in the platform on the original machine. Work from there to figure out why that is. If you are successful, report back on the details. Stan wrote: - quote - > I have found at least five other newsgroup postings with the same issue - > Money 2004 crash - MSCOFD.DLL. | I have found at least five other newsgroup postings with the same issue - Money 2004 crash - MSCOFD.DLL. It appears that there is no solution... My last hope was Microsoft Support. After spending several hours on the phone I have got their workaround - reformat the hard drive, reinstall OS and all programs. Wow! It is an answer for this and all other problems! It should be posted on the support web site and in Help-About. A universal solution!
