Default Re: how to change a stock to a bond

I'm using a new version of Money (2004). Anyway, I fixed
this problem by deleting the stock entirely from the
system (under Investment-Portfolio-Work with investments-
delete), then re-adding it as a bond. Then the
subsequent updates seem to take hold.

However, I'm finding that Money is not updating my bond
prices after I download the file from my broker. I'll
look into that....

That is the method you would use when you don't go to the web site
-- when you use direct download.

Those are both listed on the New York STOCK Exchange. :-)
I know that is not the point.

I think that either you are using a very old version of Money or the
security you think Money sees as a bond is not actually shown in the
details for that investment as Investment Type: Bond. The pricing
would be wrong for you. You can go to the investment Details by
right-clicking on the investment on the Portfolio view.

Earlier in the file between <INVPOSLIST> and </INVPOSLIST> I would
expect to see another reference to 076446301 and 101121101 CUSIPs.

That is where you would find <POSSTOCK> for stocks, <POSDEBT> for
bonds, and <POSMF> for Money Market Fund or Mutual Fund-- and their

I tried what you suggested (holding down contrl+shift)
when downloading the file from the broker (I actually
have to go to the web site for this broker), but I
couldn't find any YourBank files on my computer. Anyway,
here are 2 REITS in my portfolio, from the .ofx file.
They look the same. But Money puts BXP as a stock, and
puts BED as a bond. I don't know why they would be
handled differently by Money.

But Money is calculating the totals correctly. I just
wish it would decide to put them all in one or the
other. If you know of something I could do to acheive
that, please let me know. I am willing to re-load.

No. But you could make a report that only shows the REITs. REITs do
have different characteristics and are pretty much impossible to
track as you go... The distributions are not dividends, and you
don't usually find until February of the next year how much was
section xx gain, and how much was return of capitol etc. I just wait
for the corrected 1099 for the real data.

When you download your OFX file, the position data would be in
<POSSTOCK> for stocks, <POSDEBT> for bonds, and <POSMF> for funds. I
doubt that your REIT positions are in POSDEBT sections. To see a
copy of your OFX file downloaded by Money, hold down
the Cntl+Shift keys while pressing the Connect button. That will
save the transaction info into two files. YourBankRQ.txt is the
request info, and YourBrokernnnnRS.txt is the response file. It will
probably be in your "My Documents" folder.

Bonds are priced differently than other instruments. The price is a
percent of par. So if you are downloading prices of REITs, the
computed values in Money would be way off. So I would be surprised
that these REITs are shown as Bond in the investment Details. If the
were shown as Mutual Fund, I could believe that. But I just can't
envision Bond working well for you.

I have spent a lot of time setting up my account, but I
have also spent a lot of time trying to fix this
problem. I would be willing to consider starting over.

I would prefer to count my REITS as a separate category,
like my broker does. Is this possible with Deluxe? If
so, I'll get the upgrade, if it's easier to do this.

Anyway, I definitely appreciate your reply and look
forward to hearing your proposed solution. I'm also
curious as to why I shouldn't change my BXP to a bond,
like all the other REITS. There's something going on
underneath that I don't understand.

Also, I'd appreciate a reply as well to

While I could tell you how to change a stock to a bond, I would not
tell you how to change BXP to a bond. That would be a bad move IMHO.

I would have been glad to try tell you how to change your other
REITs to a stock, but I anticipate a problem. The problem would be
that it is very difficult to disassociate a CUSIP that is already in
use.

Is this a fairly new file? Would you consider starting over?

Sorry. You are going to be pissed, and I am going to be sorry I
responded.

Default how to change a stock to a bond

I have a bond (REIT) called Boston Properties (BXP). I
downloaded my statement from my broker. My broker
classifies it as a REIT, but Money 2004 classifies it as
a stock. I would like it to be classified in Money as a
BOND, which is how Money classifies all my other REITs.
However, when I change the Asset Class to BOND (in the
Details page) it has no effect on the reporting. It is
still counted as a stock. When I try to create a new
Bond transaction, I can do that, and it will classify
properly in the report, but then when I do an update from
my broker, it is unable to match up the position and
tries to create a new position as a stock. And Money
won't automatically update the bond price, even though
I'm supplying the CUSIP. Any ideas how to fix this?
