Default Re: Can't archive -- "no memory" & crash

Obviously, you don't "know exactly what the archive function does."

It places EVERY transaction in the "archive" file, regardless of date and
then it deletes **some** transactions before the archive date from the main
file. Many M98 and up users who archived expecting performance improvements
show up here wondering why they didn't get any. And then they wonder why
they can't easily undo it. And then they wonder why the methods for undoing
it have to get around the fact that the files overlap.

Archiving is a loser. YMMV.

I know exactly what the archive function does -- it removes transactions
prior to the specified date and places them into a separate .mny file. And
there's *one* good reason to archive -- keeping the "My Money" file from
getting gargantuan and slowing up the system. I noticed Money 95 always
loaded & ran faster after archiving. (That was the good old days, when you
could fit the backup on a floppy!)

Dave, DO NOT archive in Money!!!!!

There is no reason to do this and you should first fully understand what
archive does. Believe me, it does not do what you think it will do. You do not
need to isolate your years in the Money file. Just set your reports to show
what you want. Good luck. Steve

Default Can't archive -- "no memory" & crash

Yesterday I tried twice to archive last year's transactions in my Money 2003
file. After a minute or so I got a "low memory" error box and the system
crashed. Then I did a 100% clean reboot (no startup items), restarted
Money -- and the same thing happened again. (Fortunately I backed up the "My
Money" file before attempting to archive, and was able to restore from that
backup.) I've got 512 MB of DDR SDRAM in this machine; how much more do I
need to perform a simple function that Money 95 did with no trouble at all??
For the record, this is a 2.4 GHz P4 machine running Win98SE. Last year, I
was able to archive on my old 600 MHz P3 machine, also with 512 MB RAM,
though system resources got quite low before it was finished.
