| I have a number of different accounts, and have many of the same funds/stocks in multiple accounts. As I understand things, Money tracks the details of a stock or fund, then you can place (or buy) units of that item into any number of accounts you want. The first account you place a stock/or fund into takes care of creating the stock/fund base data... from then on you don't need to recreate it. |

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. - quote - > -----Original Message----- > Sounds easy enough, but I can't seem to figure out how to > create anything other than an account. You should have an account name Mike's IRA and another named Suzy's> create anything other than an account. Can I create a > security without creating another account? > I appreciate your help. IRA. Both accounts show up in the Account List. Right so far? In Mike's you have entered a Buy for the security/fund/stock. You probably typed the name of the fund into the Investment box. If you enter a new buy of that fund, you will select the fund from the drop-down list. Then in Suzy's account, which owns the same fund, you will enter the Buy by selecting from the drop-down list also. That is accessed by clicking the little down-arrow to the right of the box. If you buy a DIFFERENT security for Mike's or Suzy's account, you can just type the name in. Money will ask the questions about what kind of security this is, and "what is the symbol?" ----------------------------- Basic Money Glossary (prototype) Account A collective place to place transactions. An investment account would normally hold stocks, bonds, and/or mutual funds. There are also bank, credit, and asset accounts. Money Help item "account" gives a description. Category The Money help item "category" says "A way to sort your income and expenses into meaningful groups so you can see income and spending patterns in Money reports." That seems like a good description. Investment A security such as stock, bond, or mutual fund. See Help item "investment". Investment Buys and Sells are entered into an investment (type) account, but an account is not an investment. Normally when your broker assigns different account numbers, each account number would correspond to an account. Each account can contain many different types of investments. Money File The file that normally has the extension .mny. It contains the data for money as well as most of the settings. It can be moved, deleted, or copied by normal operating system means. See Help item "file". The Money file can be backed up to a Money backup file with a .mbf extension. Give careful thought to your backup policy. Watch Account An account that is not real, but is for the purpose of watching securities that you may not actually own. See help item "watch". Favorite Account An attribute of an account to give it easier access. See help item "favorite". |

| Sounds easy enough, but I can't seem to figure out how to create anything other than an account. Can I create a security without creating another account? I appreciate your help. - quote - > -----Original Message----- > In microsoft.public.money, Michael wrote: > > My wife and I both have Roth IRA accounts that contain > > the same mutual fund. | My wife and I both have Roth IRA accounts that contain the same mutual fund. When I tried to set up her account and enter the symbol, Money won't allow me because it's the same symbol for my mutual fund account. Obviously, without the symbol it won't do automatic price updates. Can ideas how I can get around this? Thanks, |
