Excellent point.

In general avoid any backup that adds another possible failure point.
The clue is where special software is required because this creates a
dependency on some operating system which will eventually become
obsolete or fail.

One of the problems with diskette backup is the question of read check
after write. I don't know how current MS software handles this but
back in the DOS days diskette read check after write was not the
default. I would recommend using 2 diskettes for backup and doing it
twice.

Other people have told you how to do it, my question is do you really want
to do it. If you use Nero, Adaptec or other standard CD writing software,
you shouldn't have a problem, but if you are thinking of using Packet
Writing softwares such as Direct Cd, InCD, abCD and even WinXp built in
burning software where you can drag and drop files to the Cd, I would
strongly recommend that you DO NOT. Packet writing Software is not (in mine
and many others' opinion) very reliable, not stable and bottom line not
always there when you need it.

Before I finally gave up on Packet Writing softwares, I lost many many
things, but nothing of importance because I would not put anything on it
that I could not afford to lose.

You don't need XP to backup files to a CDR/CDRW as it depends on the
software that came with the drive. I'm not familar with Nero but my
Adaptec Direct Drive does what you suggest.

It does help to create subdirectories under My Documents (for example)
for applications that allow one to specify a data directory separate
from the application directory. Then one can periodically copy the
entire My Documents to CD.

You can back up to a hard disk, and then burn that .mbf file onto
your CDR with the software that came with your drive.

With Windows XP, you can back up to the "hard disk" that
corresponds to your CD/R drive. Browse to the drive from "My
Computer". That will put the file onto a staging area on your hard
drive. Consider modifying the backup file name to incorporate the
date.
