We have in the past very very occasionally seen someone from MS post but
ISTR that was 18months ago or more.

I think as a general rule, no they don't lurk.

That is why you will often see Cal or Dick recommend that you open a case
with MS, either because it is a very complex problem or to bring the issue
to MS attention.

Oh okay ... silly me!

If you would indulge one more naive question ... Do MS folks scan through
these newsgroups as part of their quality assurance process? I know that
other companies do that (e.g. Corel) - is that the reason behind our sharing
here? Are we hoping that someone out there will notice our complaints?
Just curious here - I'm new to this newsgroup.

Thanks.

They're hidden behind the curtain.

Web page to log bugs? Microsoft? Microsoft doesn't sell software with bugs.
You must not have gotten the memo.

Can you identify the other (at least) 4 reproducible bugs here so we can all
share?

Would you please et me know where to find this Microsoft Money product
group? Is there a web page I can log bugs? I have at least 4 other
reproducable bugs I'd like to log.

Thanks, Christine

I was able to reproduce this in the Canadian version of Money 2004.
As you mentioned it has to do with the tax deferred status.

I'll see if I can get this sent on to the Microsoft Money product group to
look into.

Default Re: Clarification

1. Create new file using setup assistant.
- Internet connection: Yes
- AOL: No
- Links to financial services: No
- Password: No
- Name: "Testperson"
- Track only my finances
- Currency: Canadian
- No priorities selected
- Skip account creation step

2. Setup new investment account
- TD Canada Trust, Tax-deferred Option selected
- Add new investment, TD Real Return Bond Fund (Mutual Fund), Do the symbol
lookup
- Initial quantity 15.00 units bought on 12/01/2003, $20 per share, $0
commission
- No other investments for now

3. Go to portfolio view: valuation view (or any other that includes cost
basis)
- choose group by: "Account Name" - here you see the correct cost basis of
300.00
- now change it to group by: "Investment Type" (or anything other than
Account Name) - and now the cost basis for this fund is suddenly blank

This problem goes away if units of this fund are also held in another non
tax-deferred account, or if you change the forementioned account to non
tax-deferred.

Hope this helps. Out of curiosity, whom I am talking to now?

Does anyone know if this is fixed in Money 2004 or if there is a patch for
Money 2003 that fixes this?

Please provide some specifics since you reproduced this in a new file, for
example:

File - New File to create a new file, Skip the Setup Assistant
File - New Account to create the account
Created a "Retirement" acccount (using the defaults)
Added a Buy dated 1/3/2003 for 100 shares of FMAGX at $100 per share (no
commision)
Went to the Portfolio, saw that the Cost Basis column showed $10,000
changed the View to .....
Cost Basis changed to $12,345

Default Re: Clarification

I'm running Money 2003 on an XP pro machine.

I tried all sorts of different things and I am now quite convinced it is a
bug. I created a separate file to try out different situations and it
appears that the following combination causes a problem for the cost basis
value in the portfolio view if the list is not sorted by account name (e.g.
sort by investment type, risk ... etc.):

1. A single mutual fund purchase made in a tax-deferred investment account,
and
2. This mutual fund has never been purchased in any non tax-deferred
account.

This problem can be reliably reproduced on my system. So for the time
being, I have just converted my tax-deferred account to a non-tax-deferred
account. I guess the other option is to just always sort the portfolio view
by account name.

P.S. To respond to your suggestion about looking for transactions of adding
and removing shares, the fund that was giving me trouble is one that I just
bought for the first time in the last month (i.e. no previous transactions
of any sort). Thanks.

You don't say what version you are running, but I don't know if that
would help identify the symptom.

In the portfolio view, I would right-click the security and choose
"See Investment Activities". I would look for transactions that are
for a different account than the main one. I would look for Add
Shares or Remove Shares transactions.

Default Clarification

I played around a little bit more, turns out the ONLY view that gives me the
correct cost basis is the display by account name option. Any of the other
grouping methods give a blank cost basis for this one fund - thereby
yielding an incorrect inflated gain (since this fund apparently didn't cost
me anything).

Too bad the world doesn't work that way - one click to change an option and
tada, you gain a couple thousand dollars! If anyone can show me how to fix
this, I would be very grateful.
