I've been known to cut paste this file from the ...\temp directory to
the install target directory for personal historical reasons.
I suspect this is why I have such a file in my MS Money 2003
directory.

My guess is the file is written by the MS install program.
I'm using Win98SE and my c:\windows\temp\msievent.log file contains:

There is no file named msievent.log anywhere on my disk drives. Is it
specific to some OS version (I have w2k)?

I was interested because a previous post says it logs information about
Money's online transactions.

Why not browse it with notepad or wordpad? Double click the file and
then specify wordpad. You can check the box that says always use this
program for this type ( .log ) file.

Mine, in my Money directory ( aka folder ), records the successful
install. The msievent.log file usually has information about MS
installs or uninstalls, and often found in the c:\temp directory.

What is the msievent.log? A google search yields very little
information, none of which I understand clearly.

Since this logs some results of online transactions, I'm real curious to
know.

I notice today in the call summary messages the money updates were
successful. Haven't yet checked any file dates to see what came through.

I posted a correction to my workaround, ie repeat weekly instead of
daily. I don't care if I never see another MS SPAM or ad.

I detest MS using my paid for software to SPAM me. I do not buy
branded computers for the same reason. Yes to 2003 ... another of my
errors.

MS will probably stop supporting my 2003 next year and I won't buy
2004++ without a must have it feature.

I have all ads turned off ( but MS can obviously ignore that too ).

This didn't help much. It got through one update OK, but
the subsequent attempts failed.

I am hoping that someone from Microsoft monitors this group
because I can see what the problem is. I have Money 2002,
but it is probably the same issue for 2003 as well.

From monitoring the network traffic when trying to do an
update I see Money try to fetch this file:
http://www.microsoft.com/money/headl...der_StdDlx.ini

And the webserver returns a bunch of HTML that says the
file can't be found. That would certainly cause Money some
problems. All previous .ini files that it tries to
download seem to be found just fine. I have repeated this
numerous times so it doesn't seem to be a temporary failure.

If Microsoft is listening, please fix this.

Does anyone know when Microsoft intends to fix this (any of the friendly
MVPs out there)?

I think it would be an enormous disservice to the user community if M03
became unable to get updated lists of Financial Instutions. I am
waiting on my credit union to be added to the FI list for two-way services.

Microsoft is aware of it. They believe it is either a
problem caused by MSN 9 or by a problem with the Money
servers. There is no way to correct the problem. I have
been told to wait for them to fix it.

It seems that my 'fix' is really a work-around which must be repeated
each time one wants to download Money 11.0 updates. Since this is a
PITA I will limit my Money 2003 ( 11.0 ) update runs to once a week.

Here is how I fixed my Money 2004 Deluxe problem:

Rename subdirectory
\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Money\...
to
\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Money.bak\...

Then run a Money Update which should end with no errors.
You should see a new \Money\ subdirectory and if so
you can delete the renamed \Money.bak\ subdirectory.

I've the same problem running 11.0 on Win95SE.
I have 2 Windows\ directories:
\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Money\11.0\...
\Application Data\Microsoft\Money\11.0\...

My registry contains references to only the \All Users\ directory

File UpdatefileStatus.xml dated 1/29/04 contains this data:
<updateStatus> <user name="C:\WINDOWS\Application
Data\Microsoft\Money\11.0\Webcache"/> </updateStatus
( Note the above is not \All Users\... )

I also note that the reference to Taxcut non-All Users directory is in
file smrtconnupdate.xml

The above ( Taxcut ) advertisement is yet another example of Bill
Gates slime. The only reason I switched to Money from Quicken was
because Quicken does not update stock option prices.

In my \windows\temp\msievent.log I see error messages about a missing
Money insider.bak file which in fact is not missing.

Read my next post on how I fixed this problem.

You are probably looking at the program files.

A Money 2002 user using XP user looks at
: \Documents and Settings\All Users\ApplicationData\Microsoft\Money\10.0\Webcach e

should find newer info that comes in during updates.

That would be ...\11.0\... for Money 2003

Default Money Updates? (2003)

The same problem experienced with Money 2002; it appeared
on Friday the 23rd.
The impact is not clear. There were no updates to any of
my Microsoft Money files in 2003 except for the primary
data files and its backup, so it would appear that
the "Microsoft Updates" received last year were not
program corrections or additions(?)

Good thinking. I see the same at the moment with Money 2003. I don't
get that problem with Money 2004 for some reason.
