Archive does not remove transactions from investment accounts. It
was not cockpit error.

If file size is a concern, you might limit future growth by
minimizing the download of stock prices.

You can do Investing-> Portfolio-> UpdateQuoteList to purge quotes for
securities you have not held for an amount of time that you specify.

Also Investing-> Portfolio-> PickQuotesToDownload will let you stop
downloading some of the quotes that you don't want to store.

20MB is not all that big. You might consider a larger hard drive and
a writable CDR or Flash Disk to hold backups.

A really neat way to find prior postings in this group is to use the
Google Usenet Groups archive.

See FAQ available at http://www.bollar.org/msmoney/ regarding more
info on file size and archiving.

The archive file is a copy of your Money file as it existed at the
time of archive. Consider reverting to that and continuing from
there.

Hugh, WHY do you believe that you need to get rid of some of the older
transactions? They are NOT causing Money to run slower than you might like,
believe me. You just think that less data in a file will make things run
faster. In this situation, it doesn't work like that. Please don't archive,
EVER. The program does NOT work the way YOU think it should work.

The best thing you can do is just keep accumulating data. I have complete data
on all my transactions and accounts going back to September 1, 1995. I back-up
to three floppies every week. I buy a new update of Money every year for $20. I
am VERY happy with the program even with its limitations on budgeting, etc.
Good luck. Steve

There are many transactions archiving won't and one whole category:
investment accounts. This is by (ahem) design. The other problems with
balances, etc., are not by design but by defect. You are discovering many of
the reasons that I Just Say No To Archiving and recommend you do likewise.

Default Archive problems with Money 2002

I have searched through this forum for topics related to
archiving and I did not see one with my particular issue.
the general gist of the posts that I have seen, however,
is to avoid archiving. That said, I'm hoping that someone
has a better answer. I will try to be brief:

When I tried to archive my transactions today, I noted
immediately that my bank account balance went to negative
$ 15k. Several of my credit card accounts were also badly
messed up.

Upon further research, it seems that any transaction
associated to the cash portion of my brokerage account was
not being archived. All other transactions were
archived. I didn't try to sort through the hundreds
(thousands?) of transactions to come up with a trial
balance, but this seems to be the root cause.

1. I am sure that I selected all accounts to be archived
during the archive process.

2. I am sure that none of my investment accounts appeared
in that list.

3. My Money file is up to about 20 MB and I really would
like to get rid of some of the older transactions (date
less than 1/1/2003).

Is there something that I can do? Is this something that
is fixed in a later version (I am using MS Money 2002
Deluxe).

Hugh Scott
