1) There isn't a "password issue" with backward compatibility of Money data
files. There is a stupid error message problem but root fact is that Money
files are not backward compatible to prior versions. Never have been.
Probably never will be.

2) Nobody made you folks buy the trial-to-licensed upgrade over the web. If
you'd looked here first, you would have found that regulars here have been
consistent on this from day 1: buy the upgrade like normal folks to get the
CD and avoid all of these issues. I also don't think it's a "rip off" from
Microsoft. You didn't keep the download files and/or the key. Just like with
a retail box version: lose this stuff and you are SOL.

Default money 2004

I experienced the same nightmare... The money database was
upgraded to Money 2004 in the process. I could no longer
use the upgraded database with Money 2001 because of that
damn password issue. My bigger problem right now is that
recently reformated my hard drive and because I purchased
Money 2004 on line the software/database thinks my trial
period has expired. Even though I re-installed Money from
folder on my back up drive it would not allow me to run
the program because it thought my trial period had
expired. They only provided an Activation code when I
purchased the software and this does nothing to get things
going again. I called Microsoft this morning and was told
that they would send me a real CD with a key code. I then
negotiated that I would buy the software at a local store
and that they woul re-imburse me for it. UNBELIEVABLE!

One correction: Instead of the "MN9" extension, there might be some other
number. Mine was MN9 because I was running Money 2001.

To what has been written, I'd add that this was all explained by Money in
dialog boxes when it upgraded your file. See also

The only thing you will have lost is the transactions that you input to
M2004.

The password message is a damn fool way for MS to tell you that M2002 can't
read a M2004 file!

When you ran Money 2004 the first time it created a copy of your original 2002
file called "filename.MN9", where "filename" was the original name of your file.
All you need to do is:
1) Rename the file altered by Money 2004 to something else (e.g. rename
"filename.MNY" to "filename 2004.MNY").
2) Rename the copy of your original file to it's original name (e.g.
"filename.MN9" to "filename.MNY").

I don't think you have lost anything.

Default money 2004

I installed the trial version of Money 2004 and now I
can't use my previous Money 2002 because it keeps asking
for the password. I enter the password that was always
used and now of course it does not work and I'm forced to
purchase a whole new Money 2004. What a rip off from
Microsoft.
