I think you are. The tax due is entirely a function of unknown future tax
laws and your personal situation at the time. You can estimate this today
given you make a lot of assumptions. You cannot calculate it.

I calculate that in a spreadsheet today.

401K is pretax contribution and tax deferred gains. If
you know the actual total pretax contribution you can
compute the tax owed which is usually income tax rates
(assuming a certain income tax rate or this can be user
configured)

Am I missing something ?

I'm not sure the FAQ provides an answer to this because I'm not sure there
is an answer to this--i.e., there isn't a way to do what you ask. How would
Money possibly know what the tax take will be on a 401k at some point
uncertain in the future???

Dear Cal Learner - thank you for the prompt response.

Could you tell me what phrase I should search for at this
FAQ to find the answer to my question. I looked around a
bit - lot of useful information but still no answer to my
issue.

The issue is (Money 2004, Windows XP)
For tax-deductible or tax-deferred accounts like IRAs and
401Ks, how can we set it up such that the NetWorth or
value reports/views do not show the full account value
(i.e. pre-tax) but instead take the appropriate taxes out
and show the real net amount ?

Thanks

Default How to set up views/reports to show after-tax values in 401K

I have looked through the help pages and docs without any
success. So any guidance here is greatly appreciated.

For tax-deductible or tax-deferred accounts like IRAs and
401Ks, how can we set it up such that the NetWorth or
value reports/views do not show the full account value
(i.e. pre-tax) but instead take the appropriate taxes out
and show the real net amount ?

Thanks.
