I have a cash account, and also one for my wife. Whenever we make an ATM
withdrawal it is a transfer to the cash account. For my account I try to
account for things like lunches or a purchase at a grocery store, etc. I
also post for what's spent at the vending machines. It takes perhaps 1 or 2
minutes a day. If I can't account for some of the money then I make an
entry for "Unknown" as payee and for a catagory post it to Miscellaneous. I
don't account for my wife's transactions but just post all her money to
"Miscellaneous" unless she has used cash and I am present. For example she
bought some gift cards at a restaurant and paid cash. I posted that to
Gifts: Christmas because it will help us budget better for Christmas.

This may seem tedious but it helps me make decisions about my money. For
example I can objectively see what restaurants cost the most to go to, how
much is spent for groceries, and how much goes down the coin slots at the
vending machine! By cutting some of that out I was able to save some money
for things I could not afford.

Default Recording Cash

Hi Dave, I'm not sure how everyone else does it but when
I do an ATM withdrawal, I post it to a category
called 'Cash Withdrawal', then when I accumulate receipts
for items I pay cash for I go to 'Categories' and double
click on 'Cash Withdrawals', all of the transactions are
listed there. I then double click on one of them and
change the category for a transaction to the appropriate
category, depending on the receipt, etc.

I don't know, there may be an easier way, but that's how
I do it.

Default Recording Cash

I'm new to Money and can't figure out how to account for
cash purchases. I'm trying to keep track of cash
expenditures within a budget.
