BTW, if you don't think Money makes it easier to "do personal finance" than
pen and paper, with or without the feature you are asking for, then perhaps
you should revert to the pen and paper.

Clearly what you are missing is, with auto-complete turned on, when you
enter a payee name, Money will default to the last category used for this
payee.

No, I don't bother with software.

Lame answer. I assume you don't bother with software and you
just make marks in clay tablets with small sticks.

Software like MS Money is to make personal finance easier. I think
it would be a useful feature to be able to assign a default category
to payees. It's pretty rare for me to have a charge from the local
Food Mart actually be "Automotive: Repair" :~).

Why should I have to select "Food: Groceries" every time?

Perhaps personal finance management is too much work as well.

Default AUTO CATEGORIZE

Does anyone know how to set up money so that it will
automatically categorize charges to a particular payee to
a cateogory? Currently only some of my credit card
transactions come with a category and it will be too much
work to categorize the rest of them. Also without
categorizing transactions then the reports do not make
sense.

Please help.
