| p.s., you are still posting your un-munged email address. Each posting increases the possibility of getting crap in the email. Now, can we get off this off-topic and get back to Money? My offer still stands that I'll go looking in the archive for your posts that went un-replied to see why you didn't get the satisfaction you were seeking. |

| You are using the Microsoft web exposure of the NG, then? While I agree that Microsoft could make clearer the relationship of the web exposure to the Dodge City that is Usenet, I would also tell you that ANYTIME, ANYPLACE you post an email address on the Web it is likely to be picked up by one form or another of spammer. What's the point of putting the email address field? Because you can't post to Usenet without an email address, real or fake. Microsoft could have warned you? I think they did the first time you ever posted anything to anywhere on the Web from IE. You do use IE? I'm still not sure I'm with your premise that you should be warned, a priori, of every risk out there in life. The requirement for due diligence is always yours. You are counting on "the experts" to do more than they possibly can. Pershaps you should have consulted just one expert as to what can happen when you post an email address anywhere on the Internet? I work in engineering 50 hours per week. I didn't put you down. You came here with a very naive view of who owed you what. The world doesn't work that way. Sorry if you take this as a putdown. | Dick, This is MICROSOFT ... M I C R O S O F T... That means it would not have been difficult to write a program/command/ macro..whatevever.. to have a warning pop up when you entered your e-mail address. And if no one is putting their e-mail address out there anyway, what is the point of the e-mail field??? Get rid of it or do not require it. I tried to leave my address out and there was a warning about THAT. I work in education 50 hours per week. Although I am very computer literate, I am not a person who uses Newsgroups-I do not have the time. So, how was I to know that my address would be stolen like it was. I count on the experts to take care of things like this. And usually they do. Usually, there are not smart alecs out there, berating the people who do are not NEWSGROUPS EXPERTS, because they they didn't know something. You can express an opinion without putting people down. Loraine Change your email address and never post it to a public forum again. This will not be 100% effective. You will also have to obfuscate the normal headers that are attached to any email or usenet posting. This also will not be 100% effective. Did you know that hundreds of systems (with extremely varying degrees of security) will see any email you send or net surfing you do. Harvesters will try repeatedly to obtain your address from them. By the way, when you change your email address, don't choose something "reasonable" like loraine[at]isp.net since there are spambots that deliberately attempt to send email to every "probable" name at a domain. You might have better luck using an ISP that has some kind of spam filtering before you download the messages (email or usenet). Just to make you day complete, I would love to receive only 10-15 spams a day. I currently receive hundreds and will probably change my email address soon just for the short respite. <<Remove the del for email> |

address and get a new one.I've only found one sure way. Discard the old e-mail The last thing you want to do is tell spammers to remove your name, that just tells them it is a good e-mail addess and elevates you to the next level.....and you get more spam. I am so tired of all these e-mails. > Will I keep getting these e-mails, or will it drop off. > Loraine others that post regularly, and you will see different ways of doing this. In my case, I replaced "[at]" and "." with "-at-" and "-dot-". Others put "NOSPAM" or something similar in the domain. Some ppl even go so far as to use profanities when munging their email address. Be sure to munge your address in both your newsreader settings and your signature. The only "list" that exists is the one in the Swen.A dat file, which targets this news server, along with dozens of others. The worm itself just connects to a server, tries to grab the "sent by" and "reply to" addresses for each post, then moves on to the next server. The speed/duration of the internet connection of the infected computer determines how much damage can be done. There is no centralized "list" of all the ppl whose inboxes are getting flooded with this junk. As long as there are infected computers, they will keep pulling addresses off the targeted groups and flooding them. Only way to limit the damage right now is to munge your email address. I just went to microsoft.test, made a test post, test cancel, reset and reloaded the ng, and from that it appears that this server doesn't support cancels. Many servers don't, as it's too easy to "forge-cancel" other ppl's messages. If cancels were allowed, you could search for your past posts, cancel them, then use a munged address for future posts. It also appears I was optimistic in believing that all older articles were expired: The first time I loaded microsoft.test I got 2300 articles, the second time I got over 30000, and the last time I got less than 500. Either I have issues with my database (possible) or msnews.microsoft.com is acting very weird (more likely, based on the 2+ years I've been here) If all those articles are really still there, the flood of junk is likely to continue, especially for those that have posted for years. The flood does seem to be subsiding, presumably because ppl are getting their computers cleaned up, or because they're being disconnected by their ISPs for excessive bandwidth usage. I'm sorry there aren't any better options. As someone posted on news.admin.net-abuse.usenet, a lot of ppl would probably like some time alone in a locked room, with a baseball bat, with the person that wrote Swen.A... -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

There's nothing you can do. If there are 100 infected computers with> I am really tired of the 10-15 virus e-mails I am > receiving each day. This is not just ordinary junk mail, > but e-mail that keeps my Norton very busy. Loraine broadband connections out there, they are going to keep grabbing addresses from this news server (as well as the other news servers targeted in Swen.A's dat file) and keep sending these emails. Only way to stop this is for the infected computers to be cleaned (or at least disconnected from the internet), or for Microsoft (and other news admins whose servers are targeted by Swen.A) to block port 119, or block anonymous access. Either of those solutions means that Microsoft would have to post instructions for everyone to adjust their newsreader to use a different port, or to use a username and password. It sucks, but that's the way it is. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

Anyone that gets infected with Swen.A adds to the problem, particularly if a broadband connection is available. Swen.A also uses the more traditional vectors of address books and open fileshares. Although garden-variety spammers have harvested addresses from Usenet for years, this is the first time I'm aware of that a virus/worm/etc has done this. Once enough ppl were infected, the traffic generated by infected computers had the effect of a distributed denial-of-service attack. Some news admins had to configure their servers to use a port other than 119 for NNTP to block Swen.A traffic. Others had to assign usernames and passwords for their users. I read about the details over in news.admin.net-abuse.usenet. More than one news admin wasn't happy that the antivirus community had reverse-engineered Swen.A, knew what it did, but apparently made no effort to contact the admins of the targeted news servers. It appears news admins contacted each other, once they realized what was happening. It appears that Microsoft's solution was to expire all messages earlier than September, which cut down the number of addresses that could be harvested, which reduced wasted bandwidth, which at least makes it where I can connect to the server and download messages again, which I have been unable to do for the last few weeks. Judging from the lack of new messages, I'm not the only one that had difficulties accessing msnews.microsoft.com. Even the web interface had trouble displaying messages. This is just the beginning. Now that one person has written a worm that does this, I'm sure others will follow. I wouldn't be surprised if news admins have to begin weekly port rotation, or a weekly username/password, in order to block future worms that operate like this. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

I have contacted Microsoft and my ISP and when they responded, THEY were not aware of this problem--(or they didn't inform me). | Loraine, this is old old news. The spammers have been using sweeper software across all Usenet Newsgroups - not just this one for something like a month.
