Kenneth,

I do use the movie & video cat whether I go see a movie or purchased one. If
I purchase one I put the name of that movie in the memo field. (Learn to
love the memo field)
As for the others, Kmart is just easier if you use one payee not separating
them by location. But you can, just put a dash and the location after the
name.

Stamps-I created a cat. Home Office. This is where I separate the stamps,
computer, paper, software, etc. Just create sub-cats.

Wedding-create a cat. and sub-cat. i.e Wedding-Lodging, Wedding-Caterers,
Wedding-Photos. etc. If you what to separate the expenses this would be the
best way.

By the way I feel that one can never be too anal ;o)

Cindy

While you are in a planning and exploration mode, you might look
into Classifications. Project could be a Classification and Mary's
Wedding could be a member of the classification. The transactions
would still have familiar Categories such as food, lodging,
whatever, but you could do reports by classification.

The downside is that the register entries have another line. You can
delete a classification later if you like.

Default Re: Quick Question on Categories

None of these questions have "right" answers.

Q1: whatever works for you. Remember you CAN create your own categories like
Leisure:Admissions. You could also call it Auto:Gasoline or even X:Y. This
is just for your insight and analysis.

Q2: whatever works for you is generally the right answer. I've created a
computer category for computer related stuff. I charge the kinds of supplies
you mention to a category called Miscellaneous:Supplies. I'd also second
Cal's suggestion that you sound like a candidate for classification. I've
set classification1 to Class and have classes:subclasses like
Computeresktop IV, Automobile:SLK, Vacation:Hawaii 2000, and
Other:[daughter] get married. This permits me to cross-link Vacation:Food
expenses to, say, Vacation:Hawaii 2000, or Computer:Hardware (a
category:subcat I have) to Computer:Laptop III (a class:subclass I have).

Q3: I add addresses for a very few Payees--generally for someone I'm going
to mail a check to who is, by definition, an oddball expense--and can never
remember adding/considering adding addresses for things like 1 of 10 KMarts
in the area. I also wouldn't consider adding multiple payees for specific
locations of KMart. If I really think I'll ever need/want to know--say for
an expense on a vacation, I'll add a note in the memo field. (E.g., "Lihue,
HI--t-shirts for kids".) Again, the right answer is "whatever works for
you." Whenever I think about adding excess data like this, I ask myself
"what will I ever need this data for?" and "if I collect this once, will I
really want to collect it forever?"

One other one... for stores that have chains (say, KMart station in
Nowheresville and KMart in Spentoomuch), has anyone had any positive
experience with separating the two? Actually having a Payee for KMart -
Nowheresville and a Payee for KMart - Spentoomuch? Or is this more hassle
and overcomplicating things more than it's worth. I was considering adding
addresses for some of my payees, but if there's an identically named store
in another town nearby that I use, it's obviously useless to add an address
for it.

Thanks again, last dumb question, I promise ;-)

More questions... the more I look at my account, the more category questions
pop up. I'm not completely lame here, I'm just seeking recommendations from
a group of folks who have likely already been through this and found the
best category that works.

What about...
- Electronics or Computer Hardware?
- Computer Software?
- Wedding Expenses (I'd like to keep it all tied together into one
category, instead of spreading it across other categories)
- Can't decide whether Honeymoon should go under Wedding Expenses, Vacation
: Travel, or if I should create a Vacation : Honeymoon--anyone with a
similar experience?
- Other expenses that really wouldn't be classed under "Groceries" but not
really "Household" either, and "Miscellaneous" is too vague... such as
stamps, toiletries, etc. etc. I asked this question some time ago but never
really received a suggestion (although thanks to the person that suggested
Church Tithing go under Charitable Donations).

Again, I'm not completely lame here, just seeking the suggestions of those
who use this every day. It's late and I've thought too hard about
classifying all these things. I've had about a year and a half's worth of
items in Money that I've been reorganizing and making 'consistent.'

Many thanks!

Default Quick Question on Categories

An anally organized person just realized this question... ;-)

Maybe someone can help me out with your solution to the problem?

I'd think that going to /see/ movies is considered different from buying
them on video. So, when I go see a movie, is it considered Movies & Video,
or on Cultural Events? Seeing a movie is questionable as a cultural
event...

Thanks,
Kenneth
