Newer versions come with content and ads that don't really help the client run better, but newer versions seem to handle uPnP NAT traversal better. The IE add-ons (which seem to install even when they're unchecked during setup) tend to cause IE7 on Vista to hang. The first order of business should be to load "Internet Options" (inetcpl.cpl in the Run box or a command prompt) and disable the BitComet-related IE add-ons. As many pieces of software (such as Money) depend on IE, it's important to do this, even if IE isn't the default browser. I also disabled all the browser integration options from inside BitComet once I got it installed. As I'm behind a NAT and don't like having to configure port forwarding every time my IP and/or listen port changes, running the latest version works for me. I only use BitComet a few times a year when there's something I'm interested in seeing. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

I had been running BitComet 0.99 or 1.00, which in the past always worked properly with Windows Vista's virtualization. I just tried updating to 1.07, and it doesn't work with Vista's virtualization at all. Every time I shut it down and restart it, all torrents and all torrent history disappears. I had to uninstall it, delete its directory from both "Program Files" and the "VirtualStore" area, reinstall it, and then use an administrator account to assign ownership and full control of its directory (and all child objects) in "Program Files" to my regular limited user account. So far, all writes have gone directly to "Program Files", and nothing has been created under "VirtualStore". Pain in the butt, but at least it's working now. There will probably be things I want to torrent in the next week or two. If you're not familiar with working with NTFS ownership and permissions, Cal's suggestion to rightclick the shortcut and "Run as Adminisistrator" should also bypass the virtualization problem. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

Public Videos] to avoid the issue altogether. I don't know what would happen if you tried to map the Virtual Store location directly into BitComet, as it's used internally by Vista to redirect from "Program Files" and other off-limits locations. As my Virtual Store is only 28 megs or so, I haven't worried about deleting it. I would assume that any files deleted from there would magically reappear the next time the offending piece of software was used again. One piece of software I have, Valve Software's Steam, stores all its data under "Program Files", and generally will not function properly on the NTFS file system with a limited user account. I used an administrator account to assign ownership and "Full Control" of the Steam directory to my limited user account. After doing that, Steam works properly with my limited user account, and none of its 18.5 gigs of files gets virtualized. I'm not sure if that would help with your situation, but if you know how to assign ownership and permissions, it may be something to try. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

"C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\BitComet" You'll probably also find your old Money files, and anything else that a program tried to save to "Program Files", "ProgramData" (formerly "All Users" on 2K/XP), "Windows", etc. under the "VirtualStore" hierarchy for your user account. If multiple users on your computer use BitComet (or anything else, for that matter), you'll have to check the "VirtualStore" for each user to recover all virtualized files. -- Scott Tyler agent_scotty-at-hotmail-dot-com |

If they are in a place like ProgramFiles, Vista will create an impermanent copy of the file for the user to use, unless the user explicitly right-clicks at launch and choose RunAsAdministrator that time. |

| Vista has some very strict rules about where the .mny file can live. If you put it in "the wrong place" then you can seemingly update it OK but when you revisit the file it is as though you had done nothing!
