| Cal, Thank you very much for a helpful response. I seem to have resolved the problem with your help. For the benefit of others who may encounter this, I would like to report the solution. However, I can't be 100% sure what was the cause. Here's what I did: I ran a repair as Cal recommended. Money reported no errors fixed. I opened the repaired file, and ran an update. No joy. Then I went in to Norton Anti-virus settings. (I always have Windows firewall disabled.) I disabled firewall, worm protection, and real-time virus scanning. I ran an update and it worked! Yahoo! So one-by-one, I re-enabled Norton's tools and ran an update. It worked at each stage. With everything re-enabled, I rebooted and ran another update. Still works. So I guess one of two things happened. 1. The Money file repair fixed something and for some unknown reason it didn't immediately appear fixed. Or 2. Disabling and re-enabling the firewall changed something. I suppose there's an unlikely option 3 that something got fixed at MSN at precisely the time I was doing my experiments. If it becomes clear later, I will post again. Thanks again Cal. Update problems sound like a software firewall or virus checker.> updates with multiple banks. File-> RepairMoneyFile-> StandardFileRepair level 2 If that does not do it, disable a problem FI for online access, and then set it up again. - quote - > Other info: I replaced my hard disk the day before this started happening. > I don't think there's an anti-piracy / "activation" scheme tied to the > computer hardware like in older Quicken versions, is there? There are downsides and limitations, but the upside is that you will have a very clean file. If you want to do the QIF export/import, I would follow the steps in http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;178830 except in the first step 4, I would suggest this: start the name of the QIF file for the investment accounts with an underscore (_), and start the name of QIF files for the cash accounts associated with the investments with a letter. Thus you might have _BrownInvestment.qif and BrownInvestmentCash.qif. This would cause the investment account to be processed prior to the associated cash account. When the BrownInvestment got created, you would specify that you want to track the cash transactions. Then specify that the cash transactions account for BrownInvestment was where the BrownInvestmentCash.qif transactions get sent. Then File-> Import ALL AT ONCE using Ctrl+<click> to select files. Specify "New or Recovered" account when asked. Of course you will use a different filename for the new file, and you will have both versions to choose from when done. I would also set up the backups to make sure they are using different names. |

| Still looking for any ideas. I'll try to make my questions shorter: I suspect something is corrupted within my MNY file. Can I easily copy decades of data into a new file then activate online updates within that new file? Thanks for any ideas. | In early November, I suddenly started having problems with online account updates with multiple banks. MS Money 2007 gives vague error messages, like "being updated which could take a few minutes" or "could not receive updates from your bank." Sometimes the update magically occurs when I am not looking. I have tried discussing with tech support. Through their guidance, I created a second MSN login (or passport or whatever) and added the accounts to it. I changed the local MS Money to associate with the new MSN login. I went to the MSN website, where my account data all shows recent updates and no errors. But Money doesn't retrieve the updates using the same login. Is there something I can do to restore sanity to MS Money? If there is corruption in my Money file, how do I save the data and reset the online connection? Other info: I replaced my hard disk the day before this started happening. I don't think there's an anti-piracy / "activation" scheme tied to the computer hardware like in older Quicken versions, is there? My banks are Charles Schwab, ING Direct and Affinity FCU. Even my Vanguard brokerage account sometimes has trouble. |
