You might also want to be sure to use Advanced Reports and Advanced
Register. There is also a setting to force the Category/Subcategory to be in
separate pull-downs.

Customize the reports. For example, on the "Transactions by
category" report (as on several other reports too), on the
Rows&Columns tab, see the SubtotalBy drop-down list.

Thanks for the suggestions Cal and Steve, I appreciate the help. I ended up
having to select the specific category, from there I was able to add the
sub-categories that I wanted. However, they still show up as seperate
categories and not all under the same umbrella when I do my reports. I
appreciate the help I will keep working on it.
Thanks Robert

That's what subcategories are for. Category "Automobile", subcategory
"Gas". When you run a report, you can specify whether you want to show
subcategories or not. If you don't show the subcategories, the amounts
are totalled to the category level. Most reports will show you both the
total and the subtotal.

You can have a category of Auto, and subcategories such as Fuel,
Maintenance, Insurance, etc. You would refer to the fuel as
Auto:Fuel.

You can make the sub-category more prominent, with it's own
drop-down list area, if you set
Tools-> Settings-> Categories-> UseTheDualCategoryDropdownControl.

You can always change it back if you prefer it the other way.

Default assigning categories in money plus

Good evening, I am using Money Plus Deluxe. I am wondering if there is a way
to assign more than one category to my purchases. example: I want to track my
automobile expenses but want a more specific break down. I want the cost
values attributed to automobile but would like to break it down further in
categories such as gas, maintenance, etc. I tried splitting it but then the
full cost values do not get attributed to both categories ie (automobile and
gas). I realize this maybe impossible but does anyone have any suggestions.
thanks I appreciate it.
