Instead Browse to your Documents folder and name the file something like "rich08" without the quotes. Money will add the .mny automatically. While in the file, I suggest you change the backup file path. Change your backup path from "C:\Documents and Settings\rich\My Documents\" to "C:\Users\rich\Documents\". I would also change the name part to rich08 from "my money backup", or whatever it is. That way there will be no confusion about what produced the new backups. Then exit. Launch by double-clicking rich08.mny. See if things behave for you. I am not sure that the symptoms of having your existing "my money.mny" marked as read-only would explain your symptoms. But I am thinking that the above suggestion would handle that case, plus cases I can't even imagine. - quote - > However, when I then try to close the program down, it wants to > automatically backup my files (which is a good thing)..but..that is when I > get the "invalid file path" error message. | OK I'm obviously not a computer guy here...but..here is what I have read. Yes, I am using Vista. The actual Money file is at C:\users\rich\desktop\my money etc When I double click on that file, my Money file comes up and works fine...BUT...it shows the last update to be 5/1/08. Once I see that, I then "restore" from a backup that I manually made the day before. At that point..... the program shows all of my entries up until yesterday. So far, so good. When I am finished adding or updating..and I try to backup..I can do it with the manual BACKUP command on the left hand side..by choosing my own name for it...which I call Money backup 10-09-08 ( that is what I must restore the next time I open the program.) However, when I then try to close the program down, it wants to automatically backup my files (which is a good thing)..but..that is when I get the "invalid file path" error message. Even if I use a prior backup name that is in the very same folder.(copy and paste it ) ....and simply change the date..it won't do it automatically. It says "invalid path" all over again. What am I missing here??? please??? If I then reopen the original money file..it only has the updates from 5-01-08...and I have to go back and restore my manual backup to get things working properly again. Any help appreciated. Rich |

That sentence seems to imply that your backup is working, but that your main file is the one with the problem. If you are using Vista, it is important that your *.mny file, as well as your *.mbf files, are not within the "C:Program Files" folder. Instead put them in a place such as your Documents folder. |

| Well, if you can browse to the path, but that path doesn't work, something else must be going on. Have you checked the path setup for the periodic backup? You don't mention version of Money, but since M05 or so this has been at Tools|Settings|Backup settings|Perform scheduled backups. IIRC, if this is set to a floppy drive that doesn't exist (as is more and more often the case and is likely to be the case if you are changing machines from a "legacy" machine to one of the new fangled ones) it will whine on every backup, not just the Scheduled ones. | Yes, I have used the browse button. That always seems to work on other files. I wonder if it is some kind of "glitch" per Dick Watson's message. Any additional suggestions will be tried. thanks Rich |

| Have you tried using the browse button to navigate to the folder you want? On Thu, 9 Oct 2008 17:00:54 -0500, "rich" <rich99sue[at]sbcglobal.netwrote: - quote - > I've got everything working fine on my new money. The old one worked fine

| Hi Rich, I have the same problem but I think its just a glitch. I usually do the backup and when it is done it pops up a second time. What I do is just x-out of the second prompt and everything still seems to be backed-up from the first attempt. Not sure if that will work for you or not but mine seems fine when I re-open it later. Good luck Robert "rich" wrote: - quote - > I've got everything working fine on my new money. The old one worked fine > for a couple of years. > BUT..Now...I have to manually backup every time. | C:\users\xxrch\documents\MyMoneyBakup.mbf ? Even this makes assumptions about things like C:. Why don't you go Start|[your name]|Documents, r-click Open and from that window, copy the path off the address text box? | I've got everything working fine on my new money. The old one worked fine for a couple of years. BUT..Now...I have to manually backup every time. Whenever I let the program automatically backup... I get the message --invalid path-- or "not a valid path---. I've tried changing the path name that comes up, but nothing that I use seems to work. Could someone PLEASE type out a "normal" path name for a vista machine. i.e C:/documents/xxrch/msmoney 10-9-08.mbf or whatever is the actual correct path arrangement? I think if I did it right just one time...then it would continue sending the newer backups there. The way it is now, I have to restore my recent manual backup EVERY time I open money, or the data ends months ago. . Thanks Very Much Rich |
