In Money Small Business, required categories is a configurable setting.
Go to Tools> Settings> CategorySettings and check the first box on the
list.

As long as you have the same version number of Standard and Small
Business, you should be able to move the file back and forth. Just tell
your client to ignore the warning about losing business-related
functionality.

Deluxe and Premium should be no problem for sure. Business is most
probably no problem, on the theory that I would have heard mention
of it over time if that were the case.

If you only want to go one way (client to you), then you could use
Money Plus (2008). It would convert the file. You could use the
60-day free trial. It is just that the file that it converts cannot
be read by earlier versions.

Then I might actually have problems opening up the client's file with my
Small Business version as there are lots of transactions without any
category.

We are going to find that out next week unless I can find a copy of standard
over the weekend.

This may actually be a one way conversion. We are discussing moving her to
Quickbooks online to eliminate the hassles we have dealing with remote
access with her.

IF we pass the file back it will be via GoToMyPC rather than a flash drive
or other formatted media. She is several states away from me and one of my
more challenging remote access clients.

If I understand correctly, Small Business differs in that it does
not permit you to enter transactions with no category.

I would predict that it would not have a problem with transactions
that already had no category, but I don't know for sure.

If you plan to pass files back the other way, I expect Standard to
say that it will not be able to use any Business-only features when
it opens the file from the Business version.

In passing files, I suggest you use USB flash drives formatted with
FAT32 or FAT, rather than NTFS. With NTFS there is an ownership
thing that could require some attention. Those drives don't usually
come pre-formatted with NTFS, so if you ignore the format, you are
probably fine.

I'm not sure what will happen there. There are many differences between the
two that may prevent you from going back to Standard with the file. I'd try
to test this with test copies of the data files before getting commited to it.

I bet you can get an M06 Standard somewhere.

Alternately, both of you move to M+Deluxe.

I'm not sure being a test pilot for these other cases is worth the grief.

Wow. And it wasn't even that early this morning. And it even says it in the
subject. Missed that one…

Given the correct reading of the question, your answer seems better. Yes, I
suspect that touching the file with Deluxe will create whiny messages back in
Standard.

Dick,
The question was Standard vs. Deluxe. AFAIK that should work as well except
that it may be the case that everytime that that your client opens her file
with Standard after you have opened it with Deluxe, she may get a warning
that some of the Deluxe features will not work. Since you've never used
those features, she can just ignore the warning. Also AFAIK the only
difference between 2006 OEM and Retail versions is the EULA. You can not
leagally install an OEM version on a machine in did not come with, so you
would have to use the Retail version.

As long as it is the same Version (M06) and the same localization (Money for
US, say) and you have both done Internet Updates, the Deluxe vs. Premium
should be no problem. All Premium adds is the online phoo phoo. Also, OEM vs.
Retail should make no difference in data file compatibility.

Default 2006 standard vs deluxe

One of my client uses 2006 standard OEM edition. Currently I use GoToMyPC to
access her file. We are changing remote access methods and I will need to
have the software installed on my PC. I have 2006 deluxe. She'll still be
accessing the file with her copy of standard.

Will I be able to access her file without converting it or do I need to get
a copy of standard too? Can mine be a retail version or do I need an OEM
copy to match hers?

thanks,
