I suspect that you did not change your backup SaveIn name root when
you installed and ran the Money Plus trial for a while. I suspect
that your backups that had been created by Money 2007 were therefore
overwritten. By default, Money 2007 and Money Plus will, by default,
make backups for the last 4 times that you exit Money. If there are
already 4 backups with the SaveIn name being used, the oldest will
be replaced by the new backup. The number of backups could have been
increased to as much as 99 in Tools-> Settings-> BackupSettings. The
SaveIn name could have also been changed in
Tools-> Settings-> BackupSettings.

Now if you did not make 4 backups while using the Money Plus trial,
then the oldest backup file may have been made by Money 2007. If
that one works, try the next-newest. I assume you can see at least 4
*.mbf files to choose from. If you find some, don't overwrite them
until you have determined they are not what you want.

Of course that does not explain why you don't have the *.m16 file on
your hard drive. Are you sure you searched adequately? Consider
running this command in a command window:
dir \*.m16 /s /a
Be patient. It will take a while. If running Vista, open that
command window by right-clicking a command window launch icon, and
choosing RunAsAdministrator. Don't get excited if you find some
"my portfolio*.M14" files tho. Those are related to MSN Money
rather than Microsoft Money.

Assuming you still cannot find that, I refer you to my earlier
suggestion. That would have the advantage, over reverting to Money
2007, that you would still have all of the transactions you had
entered while running the trial.

The original backup file was created w/ Money 2007. I am trying to get
Money 2007 to read the altered file. I need to be able to change the file
somehow so 2007 can open it.

You need a backup file that was created by Money 2007 or earlier.
Compare the timestamps on the backups with when you installed the
Money Plus trial. I expect you are trying to restore a backup file
created by the Money Plus trial. To read a backup from Money Plus,
you need Money Plus.

And you are sure this backup was made by M07 and not the M+ trial? (M07 will
have the same issues with an M+ backup file that it will have with an M+
data file.) And you have tried File|Restore not File|Open on this backup
file?

In microsoft.public.money, K2NNJ wrote:

So to recap where you are, you were running Money 2007 Deluxe
successfully. You installed the Money Plus Deluxe trial. That would
put a *.m16 file on your hard drive, which is a copy of your Money
2007 file. You then uninstalled the trial and reinstalled Money 2007
Deluxe. You find that it cannot read the *.mny file created by the
Money Plus Deluxe trial, because Money is designed to not read files
from later versions. You cannot locate the *.m16 file that could put
you back where you were when you first installed the trial (even tho
you would have to reenter subsequent data anyway.)

You can not locate a backup file (*.mbf) dating from when you were
using Money 2007 before. [you did not actually say that... restoring
a backup of that vintage from Money 2007 back into Money 2007 Deluxe
should work for you.]

If this accurately describes your situation, I recommend you bite
the bullet and buy Money Plus Deluxe -- after you copy your existing
*.mny and *.mbf files to other media. You really need to address
your backup strategy. What if your hard drive fails, for example.

Also burn an extra copy of the install file that you download to CD
in case you need to later reinstall Money Plus Deluxe or you need to
install it onto a second computer.

Where it goes, depends on the View. Change the sort order to your
preference.

Also consider turning off transaction forms.

Ctrl+T is a toggle that toggles between multi- and single-line mode.

Bob, can you help me? You made a note, below, that says "all the transactions
you upgraded will have to be re-input". My previous version of money was so
simple. I clicked on the register and simply started adding transactions. The
date stayed the same for the next transaction, I just had to click plus or
minus to change the date, the check number chronologically moved, etc. Now, I
click "add a transaction" at the top of the form, I have to re-enter the
date, the check number, etc. When I hit save, where does the transaction go?
Where can I find the 1-01-07 transactions I enter?

I'm simply trying to input data from 1-01-07 to 5-01-07 (when I upgraded).

Search again for *.m16 in the same folder as your Money file.

If you don't have that, search for a *.m1? file with a date in the
time period of when you first tried the Money Plus trial. If you
find that and it is not a *.m16 file, then the version you had been
running was not Money 2007.

Well if you upgraded to Money Plus and want to go back to your file, you have
to look for an *.m16 file you can try searching for your file by opening a
search window and in all or part of the file name type *.m16 and search on
your local disk drives. If no results appear go to the location where your
actual file is saved and look for a file with .m16, it should appear as a
backup.

Well, if you opened your M07 data file with MoneyPlus, it would have
upgraded the data file and explained this process to you in dialog boxes
along the way. When it does this, it leaves behind the original file only
renamed as Bob describes. If you've lost that file, then what you've asked
to accomplish is no longer possible.

When you upgraded Money made a copy of your .mny file as .m16. Go find that,
rename it as .mny and double click (assuming you have got M2007 installed)
which will start Money.

Note all transactions since you upgraded will have to be re-input! :-(

Default Money 2007 File Question

I have a full version of MS Money 2007. I installed a trial version of
Money Deluxe and it changed my file.

I uninstalled Money Deluxe and I cannot restore the original file. Can
someone tell me how to restore the original file so that I can use it with
Money 2007?

Thanks in Advance,
