Try this-
Tools-Options-On Line Services
Check Replace downloaded payee names with user altered names. And Show
standardized payee name for which a match is not found.
Then go to
Tools- Options-Editing
Check the box that says confirm new payees.
I think this is what you are wanting.

Sorry to be a pest, but the question remains. The drop-down "pay to"
list (click the down arrow at the right of the "pay to" window)
contains hundreds of entries, making it difficult to find the one I
want, of which there are only a dozen or so. For example, there are
47 entries for Cash Withdrawal, each of which has a blizzard of
numbers added by the bank. I just want to find and click on the payee
words "Cash Withdrawal" to avoid having to type them into the "pay to"
window. How can I edit that list? How do I stop it from adding each
new occurance of the same payee? Surely there is a way to get rid of
the unwanted stuff, or do I have to re-install the program?

Go to Tools-Options-On Line Services. Check Replace downloaded payee with
user altered names and show standardized payee names. Then go to
Tools-Options-Editing and click the box that says confirm new payees. This
way all new payees will not be added into your payee list unless you want
them to be.

I hope this helps.

In M99 I just rename the Payee to just 'Cash Withdrawal' (or whatever).
Money will then ask you if you want to merge this with the current Cash
Withdrawal'. In my case the bank would add some unique identifier after
each withdrawl, so Money treats them as unique

Thanks Barry, but I don't want to delete the payee, I just don't want
a hundred duplicate entries for the payee. How can I get rid of all
the duplicates in the "pay to" list?

When you go to the page Barry suggests, do you have a Move button at
the bottom? Money 2004 does, and it will consolidate payees.

Delete really doesn't delete a payee; it just hides it in the payees list.

If they are all the same, then you can do a Rename, using the name of the
one you want to consolidate to. A message will come up confirming this, and
then all is well.

I don't have 2001 but in M99 you click Categories and payees is one of
the options on the left.

Default "pay to" list

In Money 2001, when manually entering a new payment, if I click on the
down arrow to the right of the payee window, a list of payees appears.
In my case the list is very long with dozens of redundant entries -
each prior payment is listed. How can I edit the list? How can I
suppress the addition of duplicate items, e.g., have "cash withdrawal"
only show up once, rather than a hundred times?

Thanks.
