Default Re: Best Software for Portfolio Tracking

Jeffrey,

We seem to be going around in circles. To determine if we are talking
about the same thing, click on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176841 and
move down to "install the latest version of the Deluxe Portfolio" and click
on it. When this is done, do you see your portfolio in a new format or is
this what you have been talking about from the beginning?

Default Re: Best Software for Portfolio Tracking

Thanks, Frank, but I'm still quite confused. If I'm not using the Deluxe
version of MSN Portfolio, how do I switch to that ? I had certainly
downloaded what was called the "deluxe" version in past updates, although
this last "new" download didn't use that terminology that you point out was
really a version of the standard Portfolio.
As far as the investment growth plot is concerned, I couldn't find any
options to turn on reinvestment. There are some options in my s/w for the
price history chart but only for adding some moving averages and other
additional info that didn't affect the investment growth plot. I'm just
trying to get it to display total return as do all the investment growth
plots on the brokerages but I don't want to have to pull up a separate chart
for each investment. That was the great thing about MSN Portfolio: it would
plot of the holdings on one graph -- just would like it to show the standard
definition of investment growth (total return) rather than a second,
redundant version of price history. Is there a way to make that happen in
the Deluxe version (assuming I can get that restored ?
THanks, again.

OK. You are using the same as I. That "new" one you saw is an update to the
standard or basic program. It's still nothing like the Deluxe version.

The "investment growth" and the "price history" are basically the same thing
with different units. The "price history" also contains the reinvested
dividends if you told it to. Then it would be identical to "investment
growth". Make sure you are using the same x-axis date range for each. The
slopes should look the same.

Default Re: Best Software for Portfolio Tracking

Actually I'm very confused about the different products on and off the web.
I use the MSN Portfolio tracking program (for at least 10 years) found on the
MSN web site:
http://moneycentral.msn.com/stock_portfolio.
What I use was labeled as the Deluxe version in previous updates althoughl
the last update (of some kind) last week that called it something else that I
don't recall. In any case, the problem I'm referring to has existed for a
long time. If you use the same program but when you do historical charts you
get different curves being plotted for "investment growth" then you do for
"price history", please let me know but I would bet you will find that those
are exactly the same curves, although the lefthand axis is different. If
your curves are different, then maybe my copy has somehow become corrupted
and I would try this reinstall that you have pointed me to.
Its good to know that Microsoft Money 2002 has all the same Portfolio
tracking features (I actually have a copy of that I've never used) and that
it can read the same files as Deluxe MSN Portfolio (if I've understood you
correctly), but then my question would be: does it have an accurate
"Investment Growth" graph for your investments or is the curve it produces
again identical to the curve it provides for the "Price History" graph of
holdings.? Investment Growth is supposed to show the net value of an
original $10000 investment with all dividends, interest and capital gains
reinvested in the same investment, as I understand it. If the investment
growth curve is just showing price history, then that is equivalent to not
reinvesting anything. THe "investment growth" charts on all the brokerage
web sites include the reinvesting which corresponds to the total return on
investment that I'd like to chart.
Thanks very much.
Jeff
PS I just looked at some older charts I had from 2004 and they look like
they are probably doing the same thing: just charting price history.

Are you using the 'basic' or 'deluxe version? I have been using 'deluxe for
many, many years and have not noticed a problem recently. I also use Money
2002 strictly as a basic. A folder saved in 'deluxe can be read directly in
Money 2002 so I would assume the same for any newer version. Everything I
have done in 'deluxe can be done the same in Money. Microsoft page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/176841 shows how to reload so it might help
you.

Default Best Software for Portfolio Tracking

I've used MSN Portfolio for tracking and charting my portfolio for a number
of years but am confused whether Microsoft is still supporting this free
product. I've noticed the charting "Investment Growth" option in "historical
charts" gives identical results to the "Price History" option for any
holding; i.e. it gives price history, not actual investment growth from an
initial $10000, as labeled on the graph. I have other issues with the return
on investment calculations being of questionable accuracy.
Assuming Microsoft is not actually maintaining MSN Portfolio anymore, can
someone tell me if MSN Money can
a) read MSN Portfolio files as input, b) do charting that actually displays
investment growth over different periods rather than have two options both of
which only display price history. c) accurately compute ROI ??
If so (and Microsoft is still supporting Microsoft Money), I'd be happy to
switch to that.
Thanks.
